St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

Football moves up in the rankings, and volleyball opens the playoffs with three straight wins.

Volleyball and softball opened the state playoffs last week with both teams hosting first round action. Football moved up a spot to No. 3 in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association poll while maintaining the No. 2 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Golden Lions boys’ cross country team continues to be the top-ranked team in AAA the ga.milesplit.com poll and No. 5 in the All-Classification poll. The girls’ cross country team has a firm hold on its second spot in the AAA poll after this weekend’s event.

After an open week, the football squad recorded its fourth shutout of the season, downing Druid Hills, 35-0. With the win, the Golden Lions improved to 7-0 (4-0 Region 5-AAA). Logan Rosborough rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns while Jake Delaney and Ryan Braswell each added a rushing score. Grayson Klinger scooped up a punt blocked by Nick Ruffin for the other Golden Lion score. Nick Glass added two interceptions and Joseph Crochet recorded 11 tackles to pace the defense. travels to Grady Stadium on Friday night to take on region rival, Grady (No. 5 GACA/No. 7 AJC) at 8pm. Both teams enter with identical records, and the winner will have the inside track at the top spot in the sub-region.

Volleyball (No. 2 GACA) opened the first round of the state playoffs by dominating Troup County, the fourth seed out of Area 2. The Golden Lions romped in three straight, 25-7, 25-14 and 25-5. St. Pius will host second seeded No. 10 Dalton from Area 7 Tuesday night at 6pm. The Golden Lions are now 46-5 on the year, and with a win will host a quarterfinal match on Saturday with opponent and time to be determined. 

The softball team completed its season with a first round loss to Central Carroll out of Region 6. The Golden Lions lost both games of the double header, 7-3 and 4-2. The team captured its fourth consecutive Region 5-AAA title this season, as it finished the year at 20-13.

Both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed Saturday in the Coach Wood Invitational in Gainesville. The male harriers finished fourth overall and as the top AAA finisher with Austin Sprague leading the way in fourth place. Calvin Tirrell finished 20th. The ladies were the top AAA finisher and finished 10th overall. Tessa Schwarz and Devon Dabney paced the Golden Lions, placing 24th and 27th, respectively. The boys’ will travel to Carrollton this weekend to run in the Last Chance Invitational, while the girls’ will have the week off before competing in the Region 5-AAA meet on Oct. 29.

The competition cheer squad will participate Oct. 29 at the Northeast Georgia Cheerleading Invitational at Winder-Barrow High School.
