St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The Golden Lions football team ended its season with a state quarterfinal loss to Cairo as the winter sports season starts up.

Only one team saw action last week during the Thanksgiving week. The Golden Lion football team hosted Cairo in the state quarterfinals Friday night. All winter sports action gets into full swing over the next two weeks. Boys' basketball has four games while the girls' cagers have five contests scheduled; both beginning tonight. Wrestling gets underway this weekend, and swimming and diving will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

The 2011 season concluded for the football team in the state quarterfinals for the second time in three years. Cairo knocked off the Golden Lions (12-1) at George B. Maloof Stadium, 21-0. It was the first time since 2007 St. Pius has been shut out and only the fourth time since Paul Standard took over as head coach in 2001. The class of 2012 ended with a school record 42 wins over its four-year period eclipsing the 40 victory total of the classes of 1969 and 2009.

Geno Smith led the Golden Lions with 73 yards rushing on 11 carries. Jamison Porter hauled in two passes for 28 yards on the night. Joseph Crochet was the leading tackler with 16, and Michael Healy added 12. The Golden Lions finished the season with 12 wins for just the third time since the school opened in 1958.

The boys' basketball team will take on Westminster in the lid-lifter of the 2011-12 season for the Golden Lions on tonight at 7:30pm. The St. Pius girls' basketball team, 2-0 on the season, will take on the Wildcats as well at 6pm.  The ladies will host North Gwinnett on Saturday in the home opener at 1pm.

Boys’ and girls’ Swimming and diving will hit the pool again on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at at 5pm.

Wrestling will begin its season at a team meet at Stockbridge High School, Dec. 2-3.
