St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

As spring sports come to a close, both Golden Lions soccer programs held onto their top spots in the polls.

The spring sport regular season at will wrap up in the next two weeks as several sports have either completed or are still competing, in their respective region tournaments. Both soccer programs continue to hold onto the top spot in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) AAA poll. Girls' tennis moved up two spots to No. 3 while the boys' tennis program also climbed two spots to No. 6. Baseball is ranked No. 7 in the latest poll.

Girls' soccer began Region 5-AAA tournament play last week with a 10-0 shutout of Stone Mountain. Sophomore Amanda Vocelka paced the Golden Lions with three goals. St. Pius (13-1-1) will host Grady in the semi-finals on Tuesday. Should the Golden Lions advance, the region title game is Friday with the site to be determined.

The Golden Lion boys' soccer squad upped its record to 13-1-1 with two wins last week. St. Pius defeated Berkmar, 5-2, behind two goals from Drew Morgan. Thomas Glenn, Calvin Jackson and Edmundo Robinson added one tally each in the win. The Golden Lions will take to the pitch at home in the region semi-finals against Druid Hills and will play at a site to be determined should they advance to the region championship game on Friday.

Both tennis teams have completed the Region 5 tournament with the ladies capturing the region crown and the boys finishing in second place. The Golden Lion lady netters defeated Riverwood for the championship behind the doubles play of Katie Bachmann and Ansley Jones. Blaine Boaz and Jennifer Leib had strong showings in singles.

The boys' tennis team dropped a tough contest to Woodward in the region final and will be the No. 2 seed from Region 5-AAA. Barrett Merrill, Austin Boaz and Ryan Francis led the Golden Lions in the tournament.

Baseball knocked off Washington 15-0 and Stone Mountain 15-1 to run its record to 18-2-1. The regular season ended Monday with the Golden Lion nine hosting Towers. They also host No. 8 Woodward for the region championship Wednesday.

Girls' lacrosse picked up two wins last week to move to 11-1 on the season. Claire Homrich scored five goals in the Golden Lions 18-4 rout of Dunwoody. St. Pius rallied late in the game to defeat Riverwood 8-7 in overtime to set up a region title game against Marist at home on Wednesday evening. The Golden Lions aso traveled to Wheeler on Monday and head to Rockdale County on Thursday.

The boys' golf team participated in the first ever Public vs. Private Schools Invitational at Brookfield West Country Club. Garrett Bernhardt, Nick Coupland and Drew Owens scored three victories as the private schools of Blessed Trinity, Marist and St. Pius knocked off the public school team of Johns Creek, Roswell and Milton. Chris Harris also scored much-needed points for the private school side. Bernhardt, teamed with Jack Larkin of Marist, made a par on the first playoff hole to secure the overall win for the private institutions.

Boys' lacrosse defeated McIntosh 10-4 last week. The Golden Lions (7-4) host Druid Hills on Thursday night.

The Golden Lions track and field team will participate in the region meet at Lakewood Stadium Wednesday-Friday.
