St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The Golden Lions' girls' hoops team lost in the first round of the playoffs, ending their season, and spring sports have started with promising success.

Winter sports concluded this past week at with girls' basketball bowing out of the GHSA playoffs in the first round. Spring sports are well under way on campus as boys' and girls' soccer both sit on top of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association AAA poll. Boys' tennis is ranked No. 3 while girls' tennis sits in the No. 2 spot. The Golden Lion baseball team enters the rankings this week at No. 7 after winning the first four games of the season. Girls' golf teed off with two matches while the boys' team begins this weekend.

The Golden Lion girls' basketball team dropped its contest against Columbus, 63-55, in the first round of the state playoffs. Freshman Asia Durr led all scorers with 22 points while Anna O'Donnell chipped in 10. St. Pius concluded the season 24-5.Β Durr led the Golden Lions, averaging 13 points per game while Elizabeth Elliott averaged just fewer than five rebounds a game on the year.Β 

Baseball opened its newΒ on-campus facility last week with aΒ 2-1 win over Blessed Trinity. The Golden Lions (4-0) played the first on-campus baseball game in school history in the victory. St. Pius defeated Chamblee, 8-1, andΒ swept a double-header with No. 10 Carrollton on Saturday, 6-3 and 4-3.Β  The Golden Lion nine willΒ host North Forsyth at noon and Forsyth Central at 3:30pm on Saturday.

The girls' soccer team went on the road to take on No. 5 Collins Hills (AAAAA) last week for its only match. SophomoreΒ Kaitlyn Orman scored the lone goalΒ to lead theΒ Golden Lions (1-0)Β to a 1-0 victory. Caroline Wootten recorded the assist on the goal. St. Pius also defeated Westminster 1-0 Tuesday and hosted Druid Hills on Thursday.

The Golden Lion boys' soccer squad defeated No. 4 Paideia (A) 2-1 behind two goals from senior Drew Morgan. St. Pius (1-0) also beat Druid Hills 3-0 on Thursday.

Girls' lacrosse opened its season by routing Pace Academy 17-1. Ten different players scored goals for the Golden Lions with sophomore Katie Cordone leading the way with five. Senior Captain Anna Paulino contributed one goal and four assists in the win. The Golden Lions knocked off Lovett 14-12 in overtime on Monday. St. Pius (2-0) also defeated Parkview 15-4 on Thursday.

Boys' lacrosse dropped a 7-4 decision to Westminster last week. The Golden Lions' Thursday game against Lakeside (Evans) was canceled.

Boys' and girls' tennis took on Grady in the first Region 5-AAA match of the season. The boys knocked off the Grey Knights 5-0 while the girls' team also blanked Grady. Both teams knocked off (DeKalb) 4-1. Posting singles victories for the ladies against Lakeside were Blaine Boaz, Jennifer Leib and Hannah Provost. The Golden Lions swept the doubles with the teams of Katie Bachman and Rachel Rieder, Ansley Jones and Grace Mendzef and Audrey Mendzef and Sarah Moore taking the wins.

Girls' golf defeated Blessed Trinity in the opening match of the season, and over the weekend the ladies finished sixth in the Gwinnett Girls Open. The Golden Lions will travel to Brunswick to participate in the Red Terror Ryder Cup hosted by Glynn Academy this weekend. The boys’ team will open the season at the Johnny Paulk Invitational on Jekyll Island this weekend.

The Golden Lion track and field team opened its 2012 campaign, hosting Our Lady of Mercy and Lakeside (DeKalb) at 4:30pm Wednesday at George Sattelle Track before travelling to a meet at Collins Hill on Saturday.Β
