St. Pius X Girls' Basketball Advances to State Title Game

And other Golden Lions sports news from the past week.

All spring sports were in action last week as both basketball teams continued state playoff runs. The girls’ basketball team advanced to the state title game to be played this upcoming Saturday in Macon. The golf teams were the last spring sports to get started with tournaments on the coast over the weekend.

The girls’ basketball team advanced to the AAA state championship game with two victories last week. The Golden Lions (29-3) defeated No. 1 Buford in the quarterfinals 56-43 behind 32 points from sophomore Asia Durr. In the semifinals in Savannah, St. Pius X overcame a 10-point first quarter deficit to defeat Chapel Hill 59-51. Durr poured in 27 points, and scored her 1,000th point with her first basket of the game. Jasmine Carter added 17 while Adriana Daves scored nine. The Golden Lions will take on Dawson County on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Macon Centerplex for the state championship.

The boys’ basketball team season ended with a 51-44 quarterfinal loss. St. Pius X (22-9) was led by Will Maguire’s 12 points. The Golden Lions concluded the season with a region runner-up finish and the deepest run in the state playoffs since 2006. The cagers return four starters for next season.

Boys' soccer won a match and tied a match in its action. St. Pius X (5-0-1) defeated Collins Hill 5-0 behind two goals apiece from Ryan Heard and Edmundo Robinson. The Golden Lions tied its match with Berkmar 2-2. The team travels to Blessed Trinity on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. for its only match of the week.

Girls' soccer tied one match and won the other match last week. The ladies tied Collins Hill 1-1 on Tuesday before travelling to Columbus and capturing at 2-0 win. Caroline Wootten scored both goals in the match. The Golden Lions (4-1-1) travel to Blessed Trinity Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. before hosting McIntosh at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

The boys’ tennis team defeated perennial AAAAAA power Parkview and lost to defending AA state champion Westminster. The No. 1 doubles team of Jack Cote and Ryan Francis won both matches last week. The boys host Duluth at the DeKalb Tennis Center on Monday at 3 p.m. and host Blessed Trinity Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Girls’ tennis defeated Parkview 5-0 before dropping a match 4-1 to Westminster. The lady netters are back in action hosting Duluth on Monday and Blessed Trinity on Wednesday with both matches at the Dekalb Tennis Center.

The girls’ lacrosse team took two games last week. The Golden Lions (2-1) used a shutout by goalie Allie Rives to take a 21-0 victory over Parkview. Katie Cordone and Caroline Quinn score four goals each in the win. Claire Homrich scored the game-winning goal on Friday as St. Pius X knocked off Wesleyan 11-10. Cordone also scored four goals in the win over the Wolves. St. Pius X is back in action this week as it travels to North Gwinnett on Tuesday.

Boys’ lacrosse split its games last week. The Golden Lions (2-2) defeated MLK 15-0 and dropped a 6-3 decision to North Gwinnett. St. Pius X travels to Decatur on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Baseball held off North Gwinnett 7-6 in its only action last week. Jack Spear drove in two runs while Will Robertson picked up the win for the Golden Lions (2-1). St. Pius X will host Arabia Mountain on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. before travelling to face Etowah and Ringgold at Ringgold on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Track and field opened its season at the Collins Hill Icebreaker on Saturday. Both teams finished fifth. Daniel Haugh broke a school record for the discus throw with a 167 feet, 6 inch throw. The team hosts a meet on Wednesday before travelling to Mill Creek for the Jerry Arnold Challenge.

Boys’ golf travelled to Jekyll Island for the Johnny Paulk Invitational. The squad was led by Chris Harris, who shot a 78. St. Pius X finished in ninth place out of 33 schools.

Girls’ golf participated in the Red Ryder Cup on Jekyll Island.
