St. Pius X Girls' Basketball Takes Fourth State Title

And other Golden Lions sports news from the previous week.

The winter season concluded over the weekend with St. Pius X's girls’ basketball team capturing its fourth state title.  Track and field had three individuals participate in the indoor nationals in New York, while girls’ soccer scored a victory over a top-ranked foe.  Baseball travelled for a doubleheader on Saturday and the girls’ golf team tuned up for the Atlanta Archdiocese Cup taking place this week.  Both lacrosse teams had light weeks with only one contest.

The girls’ basketball team defeated Dawson County to take the AAA state championship in Macon by a 77-55 score.  Asia Durr scored 26 points, while Jasmine Carter and Mackenzie Garrison added 19 and 11, respectively.  Laura Redmond chipped in nine points and eight rebounds in the win.  The Golden Lions (30-3) ended the season winning 20 consecutive games en route to the fourth state crown in school history.  All four have been won since 2004.

Girls' soccer won the only match it played last week.  After having the Blessed Trinity tilt postponed earlier in the week, the Golden Lions (5-1-1) shutout all-classification No. 1 McIntosh, 3-0.  Grace May, Tiffany Rodriguez and Amanda Vocelka all found the back of the net for St. Pius X.  The ladies will travel to North Gwinnett Tuesday before heading to Jekyll Island this weekend for the Tournament of Champions.

The boys’ and girls’ tennis teams defeated Duluth by identical 5-0 scores and both dropped 3-2 matches to Blessed Trinity.  Both are back in action this week on Tuesday against Marist at 4pm.

The girls’ lacrosse team won its only game of the week last week knocking off North Gwinnett, 12-11.  The Golden Lions play three road games this week, travelling to Walton Monday, before heading east to take on Lakeside-Evans and Greenbrier on Saturday.

Boys’ lacrosse dropped a 17-2 decision to Decatur last week.  The Golden Lions are back in action at McIntosh Tuesday at 7:15pm before hosting Riverwood on Thursday at 7pm.

Baseball took two of three games last week including splitting a double header on Saturday.  The Golden Lion nine defeated Arabia Mountain, 9-0, behind six strikeouts from Jack Spear and a two-run home run from Quincy Nieporte.  Nieporte hit another round-tripper on Saturday in a 14-9 win over Ringgold.  Etowah defeated St. Pius X, 6-3, with Peter Zyla driving in all three runs for the club on a double.  This week the Golden Lions host Cedar Grove on Monday and Decatur on Friday, while travelling to Cross Keys on Wednesday and Westminster on Saturday.

Track and field had three student-athletes participate in the Indoor Nationals at the Armory in New York.  All three returned with a top ten finish.  Kyle Johnson was ninth in the weight throw with a throw of 68 feet, 8.5 inches. Austin Sprague was seventh in the two mile run with a time of 9:11.3, the fastest time by a Georgia runner since 2010.  Daniel Haugh was sixth in the weight throw with a throw of 71 feet 10.25 inches. The throw earned him All American Status.

Boys’ soccer will travel to North Gwinnett on Tuesday night at 7:30pm before embarking for Jekyll Island for the Tournament of Champions on Friday.
