Second semester has started at St. Pius X, and winter sports are back in full swing after the Christmas holidays. The boys’ basketball team sits in the No. 2 spot in the scoreatlanta.com AAA poll, while the girls’ team occupies the third spot in the same poll.

The boys’ basketball team took both Region 6-AAA games last week. The Golden Lions (16-1, 5-1) knocked off Woodward on the road, 59-56. Will Maguire poured in 23 points to lead the team, with Nick Harris dropping in 15 and Ian Davis scoring 11. St. Pius X traveled to McNair and defeated the Mustangs, 64-51 behind Harris’ 19 point and 13 rebounds. Maguire and Daniel Crochet chipped in 13 points each. The Golden Lions are back in action with two home games this week, Blessed Trinity on Tuesday and a re-match against Cedar Grove on Friday.  The Saints are the only team to defeat St. Pius X this season.  Both games tip at 7:30 p.m.

The girls’ basketball team swept both of its region games last week as well. St. Pius X (14-3, 6-0) used 27 points from Asia Durr to defeat Woodward, 55-38.  Durr grabbed nine rebounds in the win while Jasmine Carter dished out five assists.  Durr led three scorers in double digits in a 74-22 win over McNair.  Adriana Daves scored 12 and Carter chipped in 11 in the victory. The Golden Lions have won 50 consecutive regular season region games dating back to Jan. 21, 2010. The lady cagers host Blessed Trinity Tuesday and Cedar Grove on Friday at 6 p.m.

Wrestling took both matches last week against Lakeside and Paulding County.  The Golden Lions will take on Marist at Pace Academy on Wednesday before taking part in a tournament over the weekend at Holy Innocents’.
