St. Pius X Soccer Ranked Tops in Early Polls

St. Pius X's spring sport season has moved into high gear as all athletic programs are well into the regular season with several ranked in its respective sports inaugural polls by scoreatl.com. Both soccer teams sit in the top spot of the polls while baseball is ranked No. 4 in AAA. Girls’ lacrosse is No. 10 in the only other sport poll that has been released to date.

Boys’ tennis took both matches last week behind stellar play of Austin Boaz, Austin Causey, Jack Cote and Parker Jones. The Golden Lions defeated Marist 3-2 and Dunwoody 4-1. St. Pius X travels to Starr’s Mill Monday before hosting Decatur on Wednesday and Woodward on Thursday at the DeKalb Tennis Center.

Boys’ soccer went undefeated in its three matches last week. St. Pius X (7-0-2) defeated North Gwinnett 2-0 behind two goals from Tyler Alexander. At the Tournament of Champions at Jekyll Island over the weekend, the Golden Lions topped Houston (Tenn.) 4-0 and played to a scoreless draw with Greenbrier. The team will host Cross Keys on Tuesday before a tilt with St. Joseph’s (S.C.) on Saturday.

Girls' soccer defeated North Gwinnett 5-2 on Tuesday before travelling to Jekyll Island over the weekend. The Golden Lions (6-1-2) tied Pope 1-all and played Vestavia Hills (Ala.). This week the ladies will host Cross Keys on Tuesday and will take on St. Joseph’s (S.C.) on Saturday.

The girls’ lacrosse team took its first two region games of the year over the weekend. Katherine Vocelka scored four goals while Molly Cartwright added three tallies and Caroline Quinn had four assists in a 19-10 win over Lakeside of Evans in the Area 4 opener for both teams. Later Saturday afternoon, the Golden Lions (5-2) defeated Greenbrier 18-9 behind four goals from Katie Cordone and three goals from Claire Paulino. After hosting Southwest DeKalb on Monday, St. Pius X will travel to Decatur on Wednesday.

Boys’ lacrosse dropped both games last week. McIntosh defeated the Golden Lions (2-5) 13-4. St. Pius X was edged by Riverwood 8-7 on Thursday afternoon.

Baseball took two region games last week. The Golden Lions no-hit Cross Keys 25-0 and knocked off Decatur 11-1. The Golden Lions return to action with four games this week. The team will travel to Towers on Monday, return home Tuesday to play Troup County and Blessed Trinity on Wednesday before travelling to Woodward on Friday.

Track and field had three school records shattered at the Coaches Invitational at Georgia Tech this weekend. Discus thrower Daniel Haugh had a throw for 168 feet 6 inches to break his own school mark. Both 4x1600 relay teams also set new school standards. The girls’ relay team of Emma Jayne Braxton, Margaret Crawford, Mary Hathaway Lipscomb and Elizabeth Petit completed the race in 22:37.6 while the boys’ relay team ran in 17:45.5. The boys’ team, consisting of Andrew Anastasiades, Joey Ferrugia, Austin Sprague and Calvin Tirrell, ran the third fastest time in state history in addition to breaking the school record.

Boys’ golf finished fifth at the First Tee Invitational at East Lake Golf Course.  Drew Owens was the low Golden Lion of the tournament. The boys’ will travel to Willow Creek Golf Course for the Georgia/South Carolina Cup this weekend.

Girls’ golf will take on Westminster and Wesleyan on Tuesday at St. Ives Country Club before participating in the Georgia Peach Invitational at The Creek Golf Course at Hard Labor State Park on Friday and Saturday.
