St. Pius X Sports Maintain Strong Rankings

And other Golden Lion sports news from the last week.

The spring sport season begins to bear down on Spring Break as all St. Pius X teams are well into the regular season with several ranked in its respective sports polls by scoreatl.com. Boys' soccer remains No. 1 while the girls' soccer team dropped to No. 2. Baseball is ranked No. 4 in AAA, and girls’ lacrosse is No. 7 in the A-AAAAA rankings.

Girls' lacrosse won its only game of last week, defeating Decatur 21-5 behind stellar goaltending by Sally Varner, who saved 11 of 15 shots. Katherine Vocelka scored five goals and had two assists, and Molly Cartwright tallied four times to lead the offensive attack. The Golden Lions (6-2) host North Atlanta Monday and take on Dunwoody at Adams Stadium on Wednesday.

Boys’ soccer moved its record to 9-0-2 as the Golden Lions took two matches. After defeating No. 10 Cross Keys 4-1, St. Pius X took on South Carolina A State Champions St. Joseph's in Clemson. Thomas Glenn scored two goals and Ryan Heard another as the team recorded a 3-1 win. The Golden Lions play Towers at home Tuesday before spring break.

Girls' soccer took both matches last week to run its record to 8-1-3 on the year. The Golden Lions shutout both oppoents, knocking off Cross Keys 10-0 before travelling to the Palmetto State to blank St. Joseph's 4-0 behind two goals from Caroline Wootten. St. Pius X will take on Towers at home on Tuesday.

Boys' tennis won three matches last week highlighted by two wins over region rivals. The Golden Lions knocked off Decatur 4-1 and blanked Woodward 5-0. Over the weekend the team defeated Tennessee power St. George's 3-2. The doubles team of Jack Cote and Parker Jones posted victories in matches as did singles player Austin Causey. The netters travel to Athens Academy on Tuesday.

Boys’ lacrosse took one out of three matches last week. The Golden Lions (3-6) were defeated by Westminster early in the week before scoring a 13-1 victory over Buford. Saturday, St. Pius X dropped an overtime game to Kennesaw Mountain 9-8. The squad is back in action this week, hosting Starr's Mill Tuesday night.

Baseball split its two games last week. Scheduled to play four games last week with rain cancelling two, the Golden Lions (9-4) defeated Troup County 6-4 behind a home run each from Jack Spear and Justin Yestrumsky. Spear also struck out eight batters and walked none to take the win on the mound. The St. Pius X nine mustered only three hits in a 4-0 loss to Blessed Trinity. Mike Krill struck out eight in the loss. The Golden Lions are back in action Monday at McNair, Wednesday at Cedar Grove and host Plantation (Florida) on Thursday.

Boys’ golf finished 16th at the Georgia/South Carolina Cup in a field that included seven state champions from their respective regions. Drew Owens was the low Golden Lion of the tournament. The boys’ will participate in the Champions at Settindown Golf Club on Wednesday.
