St. Pius-Marist Rivalry Back Under GHSA Plan

Lakeside joins Tucker in Region 2-AAAAAA.

Unless there are appeals, it looks like the longtime St. Pius X-Marist rivalry is back. And Lakeside finds itself in a new region/class with some powerhouses.

The Georgia High School Association on Tuesday released the reclassification of its 451 member schools into regions for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.

St. Pius X and Marist played 48 years in a row 1962-2009, but the past four seasons they've been in different classifications and have not played. The two schools would become part of Region 6-AAAA under the realignment.

The two Catholic schools would be joined in the region by Arabia Mountain, Chamblee, Columbia, Cross Keys, Lithonia, Redan and Stone Mountain.

Lakeside would become part of Region 2-AAAAAA, which includes Tucker and Lovejoy. Tucker defeated Lovejoy for the state title in 2011. Others in the region: Alcovy, Newton and Rockdale County.

Schools can appeal by Dec. 13 to transfer from one region to another in the same class. GHSA will ratify the reclassification on Jan. 13.
