Coming Up: 4 Cityhood Events, Education, Fire Chief, Briarcliff Park

Here are some of the important gatherings in the area this week.

Coming up this week: Four cityhood-related gatherings, hearing on public education, forum with the finalists for county fire chief and a neighborhood meeting on a possible new park.

  • Lakeside City Alliance is hosting a feasibility study release party and fundraiser from 6 p.m to 7:30 p.m. Monday at Napoleon’s Grill, 2836 LaVista Road.
  • City of Briarcliff Initiative is hosting an event from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Athens Pizza, 1341 Clairmont Road. COBI is stlll awaiting  its feasibility study from the University of Georgia's Carl Vinson Institute of Government.
  • Tucker 2014 will meet with residents at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Smoke Rise Country Club, 4900 Chedworth Drive.
  • LCA will hold a community meeting from 7 p.m. -8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lakeside High School Auditorium.

Public Education

The Georgia Board of Education will hold a public hearing about public education in the 6th Congressional District from 7-8 p.m. Monday at Tucker High School, 5036 Lavista Road, Tucker. The meeting will be hosted by state board member Barbara Hampton.

Fire Chief
DeKalb County has narrowed the field to two candidates to become the new fire chief. The public will get a chance to ask them questions in a moderated forum at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Dr., Decatur. The two finalists are Teresa Everett, fire chief in Gary, Ind., and Darnell Fullum, deputy fire chief in Fulton County.

Proposed Briarcliff Park

The Friends of Briarcliff Park will hold another neighborhood meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday at First Alliance Church, 2512 N. Druid Hills Road, where a "big picture vision" for an intended green space and community center will be showcased. The group is trying to work with the county on developing a park in the area including the property where the former Briarcliff Library is up for sale.
