Dave, Fort Hood is a military base. The good guys in the military use...wait for it...guns.Read More According to your claim, if the good guys had guns, which they in fact did, the outcome would have been different? Please explain how. I agree firearms should be kept in safes. Too often in the headlines are stories of some sibling accidentally shot their sister, some family member shoots another during a domestic dispute, a car gets broken into and firearms are stolen, the list goes on and on. Note that in my post, I said people with guns are dangerous. Guns themselves obviously need human intervention to operate, thus the deadly combination. Just like a cigarette only causes cancer when smoked. This nation would benefit greatly from focusing on getting firearms out of the hands of criminals and those that misuse them, as they belong only within the care of those that are properly trained and enforcers of the law.

Cobb and DeKalb counties are virtually the same size in population. Yet the county government ofRead More DeKalb has over 2000 more employees than Cobb. The governor FIRED the entire school board for their ineptness. Now we have yet ANOTHER (alleged) crook running our county government. Is it any wonder why our property taxes are almost double that of Cobb for similar properties?? Anybody have a better explanation I'd LOVE to hear it!
Paul Broun, one of the most staunchly conservative candidates in Georgia's Senate election, is confident he can pull through despite struggles in polling and money.

@jonathan Maquire: Too bad you didn't this one through. I think you are misusing the wordRead More "principled" when you should be using "stubborn" or even "prejudiced". This congressman denies science big time and the logical result of that will lead to the death of the human race and most of the animal species on earth. Principle has nothing to do with this. This man shouldn't represent Georgia in any office of government.

Jonathan Maguire I think you know exactly what jMichael and Kathy are saying. --- You are just usingRead More the right-wing ploy of feigning to not understand so that you can appear as though you are trying to being reasonable. I believe you know full well what Rep. Broun's position on the issues are. --- There is no need to " figure out what he stands for" he has made that abundantly clear. --- Determining whether or not "he is a man of principle" depends on whether or not one agrees with HIS fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for HIS system of belief or behavior. And since you are apparently coming to his defense it would seem that YOU do.

Richard "the Equalizer" Pellegrino April 15, 2014 at 12:04 pm
I get your point Octo but still don't like labels as such....who is to say that someone convicted ofRead More a felony but doesn't do any time in prison is not a "convict" so it sets up an artificial class of people that somehow someone who does time is worse or has committed a worse crime than someone who doesn't (because we know there is great inequity in the justice system when it comes to race and class). I prefer not to judge folk once they have already been judged and done their time or punishment by attaching a label.

"Si vis pacem, para bellum" No matter the topic, the world is full of armchairRead More quarterbacks. Those who sit around after the game, with all of the facts about the conflict now known, saying with great certainty how clearly they would have known the path to peace and how stupid everyone in the conflicts were for doing things the way they were done. Armchair quarterbacks or not, it is plain foolishness to think that every person has the same core motivations, morals, etc. There is nothing more dangerous than to believe that every human prefers peach and resolution. This is why appeasement didn't work with Hitler. Many thought that we could negotiate with him, or control him by trying to become his friend. Dictators rarely care about what others think of them. When there is a fire raging through a forest, sometimes more fire is used to battle the fire (controlled burns) to stop the spread of the fire. To say that America was/is a warmongering nation is stupidity. A man doesn't run towards conflict, but he most certainly doesn't run from it either. In any given war, had we turned our soft fleshy side towards our enemy, we would have only emboldened them, allowing them to continue to grow and get stronger. Sometimes as much as you do not want to fight, sometimes fighting is required. A bully cannot be reasoned with. Any kids who has ever been bullied knows this fact. You stand your ground and fight so the bully knows that from this day forward you will not be an easy target. He knows that he will always be met with a fight. This President has destroyed America. Our foreign policy issues exist due to our perceived weakness. More people will die due to our weakness than if we had maintained our strength, even if that meant a skirmish.

Working with juvenile offenders and social services for the past 21 years, I can tell you thatRead More social services for children and the juvenile justice system are two of the most neglected services most states have. I'm glad to see that we have a governor that is giving attention to these areas. If we want to fix what ails society, start young and catch them while they have a chance to start over with better skills and a new outlook on life. I have several stories of kids whose families and themselves got it turned around before they reached adulthood due to volunteer services and grants from the government. I just wish we had more money allotted to some of these programs that work. I don't mind paying taxes when I know that some of it goes to programs that can show tangible results.

We can agree that both parties have trouble selecting good candidates with ethics, but the quote above did "rile" me. Since repubs have trouble also with the politicians, does that make them "typical low lifes" also ? "..more interested in having our wheel greased"? Getting our way...yes just like cons; we both whine ! Having or agreeing to take bribes? No! I am a supporter of the "No gifts, no questions, no problem "crowd concerning gifts to politicians. Insinuating a whole class of people or political activists are crooked or low lifes is wrong. If that was acceptable, lord knows what I would call people like you!
jMichael March 29, 2014 at 04:18 pm
Road Scholar: We agree on the "No gifts... " principle. But for so long asRead More "gifts", perks, and lobbyist dollars are permissible it is my conviction that all politicians must be, by definition, corrupted on-the-take sleaze lizards. RS, you must have only read (or zero'ed in on) half my original post. I did say at the endRead More "Don't get me wrong both parties are utterly corrupt useless excuses". So a short answer to your question "...does that make them "typical low lifes" also ?" would be yes. Call it crazy but I refuse to believe that any one of the two parties is better that the other, both are self serving and motivated by something other than the altruistic greater good. You also seem to take the approach that if someone is against democrats then they are personally against you. That couldn’t be further from the truth, I’m sure deep down you’re a swell person (unless you hold some form of government position). I also find it interesting that you honed in on my remarks, which were a response to Vance’s blanket statements about the glory of the DNC and repugnant state of the GOP in GA. I could argue that your personal offense to my remarks, and me and my mere existence for that matter are deeply discounted or possibly even hypocrisy since you showed no equal offense to Vance’s same blanket statements regarding the entire GOP but I won’t as that’s not that important. What is important is that fine passionate folks like us get to have free and open discourse.

A Georgia farmer has won a battle against the state over the date Vidalia Sweet Onions can be shipped. File|Patch
Mack March 26, 2014 at 09:46 am
This is not a 'Ridiculous' law suit but an attempt to stop government from interfering in a privateRead More business. This farmer should have the right to operate his business as he sees fit and without the State telling him what and when he can do with his crop.
Beau waters March 31, 2014 at 08:53 am
I hate it when only half of a story gets told. This is not a case of Government interference. ForRead More years the Vidalia onion has suffered from quality issues because in an effort to rush to market, immature onions that rot quickly on store shelves, have been harvested. In the past year, growers of the onion asked Commissioner Black to help them. Three separate listening sessions were held and an overwhelming majority of the growers asked for this very rule. Bland farms grows onions in Texas and Mexico and it is debatable wether his Vidalia onions actually come from Georgia. This rule takes away his huge advantage of putting out fake Vidalias and thus the reason for the lawsuit.
Jordan Reese April 17, 2014 at 12:27 pm
While some of you may think it is ridiculous, being a Vidalia native I feel that you are completelyRead More and totally uninformed. This is only half of the story. Vidalia Onions are what this town basically runs on. The onions bring in more money each and every year. However, when someone puts out onions that are not ripened to their prime, it creates a stink. People are then angry with the city of Vidalia for their rotten onions, rather than the grower/s for harvesting them too early. This is why Commissioner Black made this rule, because the GROWERS asked for it. For years people have put out "early Vidalia's" and it hurts the business for others who wait it out until the crop is ready. It also creates a bad name for Vidalia's if someone purchases them early and are unhappy. It's all about the quality of the onions. It's not ridiculous, it's the right thing to do.

JMichael, most of the problems and blame game excuses come from the way our system has deviated fromRead More its original purposes. I'm all for term limits in congress. Look at anything where leaders go on too long and become stale, reinventing the same old thing. We have them for the presidency to hold down a one man rule type of government, and I think we should do the same for congress for the same reason. This introduction of bills and provisions for votes needs to be explained and stopped if it has no merit to getting the will of the people done.
