AdvancED President to Give Druid Hills High's Commencement Address

Mark Elgart is scheduled to speak at the May 24 ceremony.

Mark Elgart, president of AdvancED, has been confirmed to give the commencement address at Druid Hills High School's graduation ceremony, an ajc.com article reports. According to the DeKalb county school district's website, Druid Hills High's ceremony is May 24, 10 a.m. at the Atlanta Civic Center.

Superintendent Thurmond Releases 90-Day Plan

The plan for DeKalb's schools came out late Tuesday.

DeKalb County Schools Interim Superintendent Michael Thurmond unveiled a 90-day plan of action on Tuesday. Shortly after the plan went out, Patch met with Thurmond, who said: "Did you see the plan? Every day things get a little better, but every day you find something else that's wrong. It took years to get that way, and will take a while to fix." Oak Grove Elementary Students Place in Statewide Art Competition

The Clean Air Campaign has honored Eshal Siddiqui and Payten Shoemake of Oak Grove Elementary with honorable mentions in the third annual Young Lungs at Work statewide art competition.

Lakeside High to Honor Departing Principal Reed

The PTSA is also asking the public to send in thoughts or wishes.

Lakeside High School will honor departing Principal Joe Reed next month. The PTSA announced the May 14 event and is asking for contributions from the community to commemorate Reed's time as principal. From an email the group sent out: First, we invite you to join us at Lakeside on May 14th at 7 pm for a reception honoring Mr. Reed. New School Board Leaders Invited to Northlake Community Alliance Annual Meeting

The NCA's annual meeting will be May 23 at Briarlake Baptist Church.

District 4 Board of Education member and vice chair Jim McMahon, and Super District 8 board member Karen Wheel-Carter have been confirmed for the Northlake Community Alliance (NCA)'s annual meeting on May 23, according to the group's website. "They will talk about what they are doing to correct the problems that lead to SACS placing it on Probation, and to get the DeKalb School system back on top" according to NCA's site. NCA also has invited interim DeKalb school superintendent Michael Thurmond. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. May 23 in the back lot building of Briarlake Baptist Church. An Open Letter to Michael Thurmond

A parent attended last Wednesday's Emory LaVista Parent Council meeting in Druid Hills and has a few thoughts.

Mr. Thurmond, Thank you for your honest back and forth with citizens at this morning's Emory LaVista Parent Council meeting. I attend a lot of meetings and your willingness to stay in the conversation is a refreshing change. Many of your subordinates have a record of walking out instead of dealing with difficult questions. Every time I hear you speak I become a more ardent supporter. You may be the right person to be superintendent at this time. I particularly appreciate your attitude of getting to know how things work before attempting to make any big changes. Hopefully, you are a fast learner. I have to tell you parents are well aware you are not answering many of the questions asked. I repeat my question, are salaries of employees going…

International Community School to Host Documentary Screening

The Medlock Park charter school is the subject of "A Place in the World," a documentary.

Medlock Park's International Community School will host a screening next weekend of A Place in the World, a documentary that chronicles the school and its diverse study body. The screening will be held in the school cafeteria Saturday, April 27, from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., according to the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association. See the MANA post for more details. Several Local Schools Get Wireless Internet Access

The DeKalb County School District has plans to outfit the entire system by winter.

The DeKalb County School District has undertaken a fast-paced technology plan to make 123 schools and centers wireless by the winter. With a total price tag of $4.5 million, the project is funded through the Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax. Currently, 14 schools and centers are completed with an average of one access point per two classrooms. The completed schools are Cedar Grove High, Chamblee Middle, Clarkston High, Coralwood Center, International Student Center, Kittredge Magnet School, Lithonia High, Lithonia Middle, Margaret Harris Comprehensive School, Miller Grove High, Peachtree Middle, Redan Middle, Tucker Middle and Warren Technical School.
