Both St. Pius X Soccer Teams Take State Titles

And other Golden Lions sports news from the previous week.

St. Pius X captured the fifth and sixth state titles of the 2012-13 school year as both Golden Lion soccer teams took the AAA crown last weekend. It marked the fourth time since 2001 that the squads swept their respective classification championship. Baseball also remains alive as it advanced to the semi-finals after another three-game series win. Boys’ golf played for the state championship Monday. Girls’ lacrosse had individual honors announced last week for two of its team members. Boys’ soccer did not yield a goal in the post-season as the Golden Lions (19-0-2) captured the AAA championship with a 2-0 win over Woodward. St. Pius X Spring Sports Wind Down in State Playoffs

And other Golden Lions sports news from the previous week.

The spring sport season is winding down at St. Pius X as the end of the school year approaches. Boys’ tennis finished as state runners-up while both soccer teams have advanced to the state semi-finals. Baseball stayed alive with two wins in decisive game threes to advance to the quarterfinals while each lacrosse team ended its season. Boys’ golf waits another week before participating in the state championship. Boys’ soccer has yet to allow a goal in the post-season as the squad shut out both Cartersville and Chapel Hill to advance to the semi-final round. The Golden Lions (17-0-2) were led by two goals from Alex Kowalski in a 3-0 win over Cartersville. St. Pius X then had to go on the road to face Chapel Hill and won 10-0 as Tyler …

Lakeside Falls to McIntosh to Wrap Up Soccer Season

The Vikings lost 6-1 Saturday.

The Lakeside Vikings 2013 high school soccer season came to an end on Saturday as host and No. 1 ranked McIntosh pulled away for a 6-1 victory in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals. McIntosh which had defeated Lakeside 1-0 earlier in the season got out to a 1-0 lead only to see the Vikings score to tie the game at 1-1. The Lakeside goal was just the second scored all season against the McIntosh defense which has led the team to a perfect 21-0 season heading into the semifinals. McIntosh got two more goals in the first half on the way to a 3-1 lead at the break. Lakeside gave up a quick goal to start the second half as the Vikings went on to fall by the final of 6-1. Early Red Card Plagues Silverbacks in Loss

Nasco’s first-half red card forces Silverbacks to play 68 minutes with 10 men

The Atlanta Silverbacks suffered their first road loss of the 2013 season on Sunday afternoon, falling to FC Edmonton, 3-0, at Clarke Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta. Silverbacks Head Coach Brian Haynes named a similar lineup to the ones that have been producing plenty of goals early in the season. Forward Jahbari Willis started in place of forward Ruben Luna, while goalkeeper Joe Nasco returned to the starting lineup after sitting out last game. The Silverbacks (2-1-2) dominated possession early on, and created numerous scoring opportunities. Hornsby Heads to Hungary for Kayaking World Cup

The Lakeside graduate will compete in Saturday's K1 200m heats.

Lakeside graduate and 2012 Olympic kayaker Tim Hornsby will compete Saturday in the Sprint World Cup No. 1 in Hungary. Hornsby will race in K1 200m heats on Saturday, according to the USA Canoe/Kayak team. Lakeside Wins Penalty Kick Thriller Over Heritage to Make State Quarterfinals

The Vikings next match is set for Saturday.

Lakeside goalie Susjed Garcia dove to his left and got just a piece of Delvin Bickham’s penalty kick shot to push it wide of the goal and clinch the Vikings’ 2-1 victory (4-2 in penalty kicks) over Heritage-Conyers on Tuesday at Hallford Stadium. The win propelled the Vikings (14-4-2) into the Class AAAAA state playoffs’ quarterfinals against today’s (Wednesday) winner of No. 1 ranked McIntosh (19-0-0) and Evans (12-5-0) which is tentatively set for Saturday. The two teams had played to a 1-1 after overtime to force the game into the penalty kick session. St. Pius X Takes Fourth State Championship of Year

And other Golden Lions sports news from the past week.

St. Pius X captured its fourth state championship of the 2012-13 school year as boys’ track and field dominated the field at the state meet. Boys’ tennis advanced to the state semifinals. Both soccer teams finished the regular season ranked on the top of their respective polls while baseball dropped to No. 7 in AAA. Girls’ lacrosse continues to stay at No. 8 in the A-AAAAA rankings by scoreatl.com. Boys’ track and field racked up 85 points, almost double the total of the second-place finisher, to capture the state championship this weekend. Daniel Haugh picked up two titles in both the discus and shot put, respectively. Fred Dorsey took first-place in the Triple Jump and Austin Sprague captured both the 1600 and 3200-meter races. Silverbacks, Scorpions Play to 2-2 Draw

The Silverbacks earned a tough point on the road.

The Atlanta Silverbacks and the San Antonio Scorpions played to a 2-2 draw at Toyota Field Saturday night. The Atlanta Silverbacks started off the game fast with some fluid passing and a lot of possession. It would not take long for them to get on the board as Silverbacks midfielder Danny Barrera found Richie Menjivar in space behind the defense. Menjivar was able to slot it past Scorpions goalkeeper Pat Hannigan for his first goal of the season in the 5th minute. After the goal, the Scorpions’ play picked up as they started to threaten. Scorpions forward Hans Denissen would equalize minutes later in the 20th minute, cutting in on a corner kick.
