'Paranormal Activity 4' More Trick Than Treat

If you enjoy watching characters sleep while their furniture moves around them, I have just the movie for you.

A Nevada family plays host to a very odd 6-year-old neighbor boy whose unseen mother has suddenly been hospitalized in Paranormal Activity 4. A group of young unknown actors jump into the Paranormal Activity formula without a hitch. The long stretches of green night-cam footage manage to creep you out as you try to figure out if you just saw movement in the corner. And when something eventually flies across the screen, no matter how much you try to anticipate it, you jump.  A neighborhood witches' coven plays into the proceedings, adding to the drama. In the end, as expected, all you really get is a whole bunch of jolts and scares. If you have seen any of the previous films, it's more of the same. This time around I was more tricked than …

'Argo' is Timely, Topical and Thoroughly Entertaining

Six Americans are rescued from Iran in 1980 (true story), and now the real-life drama is a movie and a good one at that!

On Nov. 4, 1979, a large group of Iranians stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But six Americans did escape. The story about how those six made it out is the set-up for the film Argo. The six find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. That's when CIA operative Tony Mendez comes in. He's played by Ben Affleck, who also directs the film. He cooks up a plan to fly in alone and fly out with the six, all of them posing as a film crew scouting locations for a faux Star Wars knockoff titled Argo. It's a crazy scheme to get hostages out by fronting a fake movie, but it works… and, at times, it's very funny. There are some great supporting roles for Bryan Cranston, the CIA boss; Alan Arkin, the fake movie …

'Frankenweenie' Is Frighteningly Good

It's funny, adventurous, creepy and even sentimental, and with it being in black and white and 3D, I think it's going to be a hit.

It's part Frankentstein, part Lassie, but somehow director Tim Burton makes it work in this stop-motion animation simply called Frankenweenie. It's the story of a young boy (Frankenstein) who uses all his talents to bring back his beloved dead dog. There are a lot of references to old horror movies all wrapped up in a heartwarming boy-and-his-dog film the whole family should enjoy. Several celebrities lend their voices to this film that should appeal most to mom and dad. Fans of Boris Karloff will also enjoy this. It's strange in a Tim Burton kind of way but, in my opinion, some of his best work in a long, long time. The characters are all pretty amusing and Victor Frankenstein is a suitable hero for this family friendly horror film with …

'Hotel Transylvania' is a Howl

A new animation about vampires is a twisted version of "Twilight," with a whole bunch of fart jokes. The good news is it doesn't stink.

Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy...they all come out in this 3D animation where monsters who have to get away from humans and the horrors of modern life head to "Hotel Transylvania." Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) is the head of the house at "Hotel Transylvania." When his daughter Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez) longs for the human world, problems arise, causing quite a scare for the hotel guests. There are more than a dozen celebrity voiceover characters here which does add to the mainly slapstick animation consisting of supernatural chase scenes and jokes involving excrement, ectoplasmic goo, rear ends and breaking wind.  The film is a perfectly Halloween-themed movie for kids, but leaves very little for the adults. It's a fun film but …

'Resident Evil: Retribution' a Non-Stop Zombie Bloodbath

The "Resident Evil" franchise is back with a fifth movie. There is plenty of action and plenty of zombies, all in 3D. Simply put, it may be the best one yet.

Milla Jovovich jumps back into her role as Alice. This time, she is trapped inside a compound making this a great rescue mission, as she tries to escape the land of zombies in Resident Evil: Retribution. Fans of the franchise will love the resurrection of some familiar actors from other Resident Evil movies along with some new ones. This film feels more like a video game than previous films because Alice has to go through different levels to escape. The acting overall is not that great. But fans of the franchise aren't there for that. It's all about the action, and there is plenty of it. The Moscow scene involving a Rolls-Royce car chase and Russian zombies was perhaps my favorite. But I digress. Die-hard fans of the series should love …

'The Words' Falls Short

Bradley Cooper plays a writer who rips off another writer who just happened to be Jeremy Irons. Bad idea? Oh, I think so...

Bradley Cooper wants to be a professional writer but he can't because, well, he's not good enough. He comes across a transcript form shelved for years, publishes it, and tells the world it's his work when we ALL know it's not The Words. Jeremy Irons plays the writer who actually wrote the book. He confronts Cooper's character, accusing him of plagiarism, and then proceeds to tell him his back story, thus slowing down the film to a turtle's pace. Other actors in the film include small roles from Zoe Saldana, Dennis Quaid and Olivia Wilde. Despite a talented cast, the film seemed a bit jumbled toward the middle. You see, there are actually three different stories going on, making it difficult to follow because they are not chronological. …

'Hit and Run' a Comedic Crime

Bad acting, clunky car chase scenes, saucy language and perverted violence are all ways to describe this week's movie.

Dax Shepard plays a reformed bank robber living with his girlfriend and real-life fiance Kristen Bell. When they go on a trip to L.A. for a job interview the fun begins in Hit and Run. The two are being followed by Tom Arnold, an official overseeing Shepard's Witness Protection Progam, and they are also being stalked by Bradley Cooper, who plays a lowlife in desperate need of some confiscated property. This car chase movie is not for the easily offended. In fact, just about everyone, on some level, should be offended. This brand of comedy is not even slapstick; it's just vicious in nature. If you are a huge fan of muscle cars, you may find this film amusing. But it is still questionable with the price of admission. The Flick-O-Meter gives…

'The Expendables 2' is Loud, Dumb, Action-Filled Fun

The '80s action heroes head out on another mission, making this sequel better than the original.

Our team of action heroes get betrayed on an overseas mission, and they set out on revenge in The Expendables 2. Sure, there are dopey scenes but the action sequences are great with Chuck Norris' character stealing every scene he is in. Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a great bad guy, and his fight scenes with Sylvester Stallone are some of the best I've seen in a while. Arnold Schwarzenegger, on the other hand, seemed a bit rusty. But, really, he's never been much of an actor anyway. The action is non-stop from the opening scene to the climatic airport battle. It's fun to watch. The Expendables 2 features just about every action star of the '80s. If you grew up with these guys it works as a great nostalgia trip.  The Flick-O-Meter gives The …

'The Dark Knight Rises' a Masterpiece

Our Patch reviewer says this is simply an amazing movie.

Christian Bale plays Bruce Wayne again. His fortune is dwindling; his body is battered and his alter ego continues to elude police in The Dark Knight Rises. This is a tough movie to review because I don't want to spoil anything. So I will try keep my review spoil-free. Basically, Batman is forced out of retirement after a new bad guy emerges from the sewer, a thug named Bane (played by Tom Hardy). When he shows up, Gotham is overrun by anarchy. The supporting actors are fantastic in this film. Commissioner Gordon is again played by Gary Oldman; Marion Cotillard plays a philanthropist; Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a cop; and Anne Hathaway digs her claws into the role of Catwoman. You will laugh, you will cry, and there is a good chance you …

Boosted Security in North Druid Hills Following Colorado Shooting?

AMC Theatres, which operates a theater in North DeKalb Mall, is boosting security nationwide following Colorado movie theater shooting that left 12 dead and 58 injured early Friday morning.

If you go to AMC North DeKalb Mall 16 this weekend, you might see a boosted security presence. The AMC Theatres chain is bolstering security procedures at its theatres nationwide in the wake of the Colorado movie theater shooting that left 12 dead and 58 injured during an early Friday morning screening of The Dark Knight Rises. From a story on Deadline Hollywood: The company will not allow any guests into theaters “in costumes that make other guests feel uncomfortable and we will not permit face-covering masks or fake weapons inside our buildings”. Said the chain: “We’re reinforcing our security procedures with our theatre teams, which we cannot discuss in detail for obvious, safety reasons. Local law enforcement agencies, our landlords …
