Levitas Avoids Press Question Regarding Cityhood Position

The former state representative, who has organized cityhood panels in Oak Grove, declined to say whether he supported the creation of another city in the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area.

Kevin Levitas, a former state represenative and organizer of two recent cityhood panels in Oak Grove, declined last week to tell a reporter whether he supported cityhood in the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area. The former District 82 representative was quoted in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution story published Saturday about DeKalb County's image problem in the wake of recent county government and school system scandals. From the story: Some residents are doing more than complain. Home owners in north-central DeKalb, around the Oak Grove neighborhood, are talking about incorporating their own city. And a Dunwoody legislator is pushing to change the State Constitution to empower the city to create its own school system separate from the …

Don--one thing that might result from a more patient process, admittedly not one pursued by other areas, would be a thorough understanding of what alternative forms of local (extra-local) representation might be available--and yet quite effective on zoning and development issues. As an example, CIDs: although these represent commercial property owners, when a CID is applied over a large area, …   more ›

Leaders Offer Conflicting Views at Second Cityhood Forum

No additional cityhood meeting was scheduled at the end.

After a second meeting about the cityhood process, are we any closer to seeing another municipality sprout out of the ground in northern DeKalb County, the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area more specifically? It's hard to say. Local leaders offered conflicting views on whether the area might be a good fit for cityhood at Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Tuesday. Former Republican state Rep. Kevin Levitas, District 82, organized the second meeting to include a balance of opinions, pro and con, on the subject. Republican state Rep. Tom Taylor, District 79, and Robert Wittenstein, a former Dunwoody city council candidate, were recruited to represent the positives of cityhood. DeKalb County Commissioner Kathie Gannon, District 6, and …

Local Legislators Announce Second Cityhood Meeting

The meeting will be held in Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.

Local legislators will participate in a second cityhood meeting in Oak Grove early next month focused on the pros and cons of creating a new city in North DeKalb County. Kevin Levitas, a former state representative, and head of the Briarcliff Woods East Neighborhood Association, will hold the meeting in Oak Grove United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Jan. 8. The meeting will follow up on another meeting Levitas held last month that included roughly 100 or so residents at the church. That meeting, which included Fran Millar, DeKalb County's sole Republican state senator, Tom Taylor, a DeKalb state represenatative and Dan Weber, a former state senator in DeKalb, left many residents frustrated. Many said they felt they were being prodded to …

Most Residents at Meeting Unsure About Cityhood

About 100 people showed up at Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Monday to listen to several local politicos talk about what it would take to start a city in DeKalb County

The vast majority of residents at a Monday meeting to learn about cityhood in northern DeKalb County said they were unsure they wanted to be part of a new city. And everyone was even less sure about where another new city might be. In what was billed as an information-only session hosted by the Briarcliff Woods East Neighborhood Association at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, the vast majority of 100 or so residents raised their hands to indicate they were unsure about cityhood. Only a small number showed they favored or disliked the idea. Fran Millar, DeKalb County's sole Republican state senator; Tom Taylor, a DeKalb state represenatative, and Dan Weber, a former state senator in DeKalb, spent roughly 90 minutes talking with residents …

State Politicos Join Cityhood Info Meeting in Oak Grove

The Briarcliff Woods East Neighborhood Association is holding the meeting at Oak Grove United Methodist Church on Monday at 7 p.m.

If you're interested in getting more information about possible cityhood movements in northern DeKalb County, you'll want to head to Oak Grove on Monday night. The Briarcliff Woods East Neighborhood Association is hosting an informational meeting with several local politicos, including state Sen. Fran Millar and Rep. Tom Taylor, at Oak Grove United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. The meeting is billed as merely a meeting about what it takes to incorporate, and a flier distributed said it will not details the pros and cons of incorporating in areas in northern DeKalb County. That said, we've been following the gurgling cityhood movement in certain communities around here, including Sagamore Hills and North Briarcliff. Here's some of our coverage:

yes--the credibility of "intent" might be a little easier to swallow if the League of Women voters should held a forum if they are held to attract specific community(ies). In this case, its clear where the activism (offence) and passivism (defense) lies.   more ›
