Officials: Commissioners Districts 3, 5 Could See Big Changes

Commissioners Jeff Rader and Kathie Gannon said Thursday night that recent population shifts could lead to major reapportionment in south DeKalb.

Population growth patterns reflected in the 2010 Census could mean significant changes to DeKalb County Board of Commissioners Districts 3 and 5, county officials said Thursday night. DeKalb County Commissioners Jeff Rader (District 2) and Kathie Gannon (Super District 6) hosted the gathering at the One DeKalb Resource Center in Northlake Mall to discuss the impact of recent population shifts on the county’s political borders.   Although the Atlanta area has experienced drastic growth, Dekalb grew at a slower pace than bordering counties, said Mike Alexander, research division chief at the Atlanta Regional Commission. “Metro Atlanta was the growth engine for the state,” he said. “DeKalb really didn’t grow that fast.”   The county’s 3.9 …

Institute: North Druid Hills Has High Concentration of Gay Couples

An institute at the University of California, Los Angeles found that our community has a large percentage of gay couples compared to other communities across the state.

North Druid Hills has one of the highest concentrations of gay couples among cities and communities in Georgia, according to a California think tank. For every 1,000 households in North Druid Hills (as defined by the U.S. Census), there are 36.87 same-sex couples, The GA Voice reported yesterday. The data came from The Williams Institute at UCLA. In fact, the Georgia communities with the highest concentration of same-sex couples are all eastern Atlanta suburbs, the newspaper reported. Avondale Estates has the heaviest concentration of gay couples at 49.30 per 1,000 households. Decatur has 39.37 per 1,000. North Decatur has 30 per 1,000. From the story: Not surprisingly, the Williams Institute found that Atlanta's Fulton County had the …

However, criteria established for the 2010 Census require that a CDP name "be one that is recognized and used in daily communication by the residents of the community" (not "a name developed solely for planning or other purposes") and recommend that a…   more ›

The DeKalb County commissioners will hold the meeting inside the One DeKalb Resource Center in the mall July 28.

DeKalb County commissioners Kathie Gannon and Jeff Rader are sponsoring a discussion that will cover district changes in the 2010 Census at Northlake Mall on July 28. The meeting, which will be held inside the One DeKalb Resource Center at 7pm, will be part of a Civic Association Network Issues Meeting, and the Census portion is the first item on the agenda. Civic Assn Network meeting at Northlake Mall sounds like a great idea. Maybe the One DeKalb office there will do a lot for bringing the nearby home neighborhoods back into Northlake. Good turnout would be key.   more ›
