St. Pius Cross Country, Football Take Titles

And other Golden Lions news from the past week.

St. Pius added more hardware this past weekend for the trophy case as Golden Lion sports took home two state crowns and one region title. Both cross country teams raced to the AAA state title on Saturday in Carrollton while football captured the Region 6-AAA championship with its win. Football remained ranked No. 7 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll for the second consecutive week. Competition cheer ended its season in the sectionals in Macon. Boys’ cross country won its third consecutive AAA state championship, and sixth title overall with a dominating performance as the Golden Lions took the top three spots and four of the top five. St. Pius Volleyball Finishes as State Runners-Up

And other Golden Lions sports news from the past week.

As the calendar turned to November, fall sports at St. Pius have either finished or in the stretch run as winter sport practices begin. Volleyball advanced to the state title game for the second consecutive season. Football moved up in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll to No. 7 after its win Friday night. Boys’ cross country continued to sit in the top spot in the ga.milesplit.com poll, while the lady harriers are No. 2 in their poll. The Golden Lions bounced back on the gridiron with a 24-17 victory over then-No. 7 Blessed Trinity. Nick Glass returned an interception 39-yards early in the second half to give St. Pius (7-2, 4-1) a 16-14 lead. St. Pius Football Drops to No. 9 in Rankings

The last full week of October saw a light week of competition for fall sports at St. Pius. Volleyball, ranked No. 5 in the ScoreAtlanta AAA poll, advanced to the state semi-finals by taking two matches last week. Football dropped to No. 9 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll after dropping its game. Boys’ and girls’ cross country were off last week preparing for the Region 6-AAA meet this weekend. The boys’ are No. 4 in the ga.milesplit.com all-classification poll, while sitting in the top spot in AAA.  The lady harriers are No. 2 in AAA. The football team dropped its first region contest since 2010, as Woodward defeated the Golden Lions, 20-14. St. Pius (6-2, 3-1) were led by Ryan Braswell, as the senior fullback rushed for 155 …

St. Pius Volleyball Advances to Second Round

St. Pius volleyball, which is ranked No. 5 in the AAA ScoreAtlanta poll, hosted first round state playoff action last week while football continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll. Boys’ cross country is perched in the top spot in the ga.milesplit.com all-classification poll for the second consecutive week while maintaining its No. 1-ranking in the AAA poll. Girls’ cross country remains No. 2 in the AAA poll. The football team was back in action after the bye week, defeating Region 6-AAA foe Cedar Grove 38-28. Cliff Valley School Hosts Cross Country Meet

More than 30 students in grades six through eight from the school and Intown Community School competed in the Monday event.

Cliff Valley School hosted its first cross country meet on Monday afternoon with more than 30 sixth- to eighth-grader runners from Cliff Valley and Intown Community School, completing a 1.5-mile circuit on the Cliff Valley campus on Clairmont Road.  “While athletics have always been a part of the comprehensive educational experience of our students,” said Cliff Valley Head of School Michael Edwards, “we are excited about adding the competitive element as we have expanded into grades sixth, seventh, and eighth. The opportunity for our middle schoolers to compete against other schools and leagues in cross country, flag football, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, ultimate and soccer will be great preparation for them if they decide to pursue …

The state playoffs begin for the third-ranked volleyball team this week while the season ended in the first round of the state playoffs last week for the softball squad. Football continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll and are back in action after having the week off. Boys’ cross country has climbed to the top spot in the ga.milesplit.com all-classification poll while maintaining its No. 1-ranking in the AAA poll. Girls’ cross country remains No. 2 in the AAA poll. The Golden Lion volleyball team will enter the state playoffs this Wednesday as the No. 2 seed out of Area 5-AAA after dropping the area title game to Blessed Trinity. Coach Paul Standard's football team continues to site in the No. 5 spot in a regional poll.

The past week in sports at St. Pius featured a coaching milestone as head football coach Paul Standard recorded his 100th career victory as his team continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Georgia High School Football Daily AAA poll. Volleyball has occupied the No. 3 spot in the AAA poll by scoreatl.com for most of the season while boys’ cross country remains in the top spot in the ga.milesplit.com AAA poll and No. 6 in its all-classification poll. As the end of September approaches, the end of the regular season is just around the corner for softball and volleyball. The football team continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll while volleyball stays put at No. 3 in the scoreatl.com poll. Boys’ cross country reclaimed the top spot in the ga.milesplit.com AAA poll and climbed to No. 5 in the all-classification poll. Girls’ cross country has held steady in the No. 2 spot in AAA since the beginning of the season. St. Pius Football Loses First Regular Season Game in Two Years

The Golden Lions lost 21-14 to then-No. 5 Thomson.

St. Pius finished the first week in which all six fall sport teams saw action.  Competition cheerleading opened its season at Meadowcreek last weekend.  Volleyball continues to sit in the No. 3 spot in the AAA Scoreatl.com poll.  Football dropped to No. 5 in the Georgia High School Football Daily/Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA pool. In the ga.milesplit.com cross country polls, the Golden Lion boys' squad dropped to No. 2 in AAA and No. 7 in the all-classification poll. DeKalb Schools Cross Country: Week Three Results

Lakeside placed fifth in this week's races at Druid Hills Middle School.

The Southwest DeKalb Panthers and Lady Panthers won by double digits to sweep the second boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country races at the Druid Hills Middle School course on Tuesday. All five of the Panthers finished in the top 10 racers in the boys’ race led by a one-two finish from seniors Jacques Williams (18:15.12) and Christopher Morris (18:31.07) to out do Tucker 24-47. Martin Luther King Jr. was third with 103 and Towers fourth with 159. Brandon Dorsey was fourth in 18:46.80 while sophomores Khalid Johnson (20:25.52) and Shonto Williams (20:26.73) finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Miller Grove senior Rahiim Aponte was third in 18:40.19 and Tucker senior Ebenezer Agaro (19:00.89) was fifth to round out the top five …
