Dresden, Henderson Mill Elementary Schools Named 'Distinguished'

The two schools were among 25 that were named Title 1 Distinguished Schools by the Georgia Department of Education earlier this week.

The DeKalb County School System announced today that 25 county schools – including Dresden and Henderson Mill elementary schools – have been named Title I Distinguished Schools by the Georgia Department of Education. "Our teachers, students and administrators work diligently each day to achieve academic excellence and student success," DeKalb County Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson said in a statement. "Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, and I am encouraged by their progress." Title I Distinguished Schools that have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for three consecutive years are awarded a certificate while those who have made AYP eight or more years receive a monetary award paid for out of federal funds. St. Pius Continues to Spread Christmas Joy at Dresden Elementary

The Catholic school will make sure 169 elementary school students from 57 families receive clothing and gifts, among other items.

For the fifth consecutive year, the St. Pius X Catholic High School community has teamed up with Dresden Elementary School to adopt families and help share in the celebration of Christmas. The partnership is coordinated by the St. Pius Mothers’ Club as a way to help those in need have a memorable holiday season. This year, St. Pius will help 169 Dresden Elementary students from 57 families.  All of the children in the family receive gifts, including older or younger siblings who may not attend Dresden. The main focus is on articles of clothing for the children. Each child, on average, receives two outfits, a coat, shoes, fleece blanket, a hygiene kit and several toys. What Do We Get Out of SPLOST IV?

If voters approve the $475 million package the board of education passed Monday night, North Druid Hills could see new schools and renovations.

If DeKalb County voters in November approve a $475 million package of school construction and renovations across the county, the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area could see a host of new projects and renovations. The DeKalb County Board of Education passed a resolution Monday night, calling for a referendum on the sales tax program–known as SPLOST IV–to be presented to voters in Decatur and DeKalb and Fulton counties. The plan is part of a massive, ongoing reorganization of the DeKalb County School System that seeks to phase out smaller, community-oriented schools.
