Druid Hills Middle Student in Trouble Over Toy Gun

A sixth-grader brought a "BB" gun to school.

A Druid Hills Middle School student is in trouble over a toy gun, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. From the story: The latest incident occurred at Druid Hills Middle School, where a 6th grade boy was discovered last week with a “BB” pistol, according to the letter by principal Robert B. Thorpe. Group Seeking Druid Hills Charter Cluster Meets Tuesday

The group wants to turn Druid Hills High School and its feeder schools into a charter cluster.

A committee investigating the creation of a charter cluster around Druid Hills High School and its feeder schools will meet Tuesday. In addition to the high school, the Druid Hills Charter Cluster would include Druid Hills Middle School and Avondale, Briar Vista, Fernbank, Laurel Ridge and McLendon elementary schools. Why start a "charter cluster?" Druid Hills Middle Collecting Food for Students

The food drive runs from Tuesday to Nov. 9.

Druid Hills Middle School is collecting food for students during break. A good opportunity if you've got kids at the school (or even if you don't). Pitch in. A note from the school: We will again keep the food in the school by providing baskets for students right here at DHMS.      The goal is to collect foods the kids can easily fix for breakfast or lunch during the week long Thanksgiving holiday break and hopefully have enough to distribute again before the winter holiday break. Donations of cereal, instant oatmeal, instant grits, pop tarts, crackers, peanut butter, jelly, mac n cheese, ravioli, spaghetti O's, soups, tuna or canned chicken, canned fruit, ect....... Middle Schools Football: Recap and Preview

Druid Hills and Henderson hit the gridiron this weekend.

Championships in Regions 3 and 4 are on the line this weekend as DeKalb teams fight for the No. 1 seeds heading into the 2012 playoffs in two weeks. Undefeated Peachtree (5-0, 3-0) takes on Columbia (3-1, 2-0) to see who can take that big step towards the Region 3 title and No. 1 seed. Peachtree can sew up the region title with a victory while Columbia could move to within one win of the title by defeating Peachtree. The Miller Grove Wolverines and Stone Mountain Pirates clash in a 10:30 a.m. game at Hallford Stadium for the opportunity to take control of the Region 4 top spot. Druid Hills Middle Football Loses to Chapel Hill

Looking back on week four, and forward to week five, in DeKalb County middle school football.

DeKalb County Middle School Football moves into the fifth week of play on Saturday with the undefeated Bethune Lions (3-0, 1-0) taking on the undefeated Champion Chargers (3-0, 1-0) for the lead in the Region 1 standings. The pair meets at Avondale Stadium for a 10:30 a.m. kickoff to see who takes control of Region 1. The Lions come into the game on a 19 game regular season winning streak following a 50-20 win over the Tucker Tigers (1-3, 1-1) last week. Champion had a bye-week after shutting out Sequoyah (0-4, 0-2) 58-0 in Week 3 action. Region 2 also has a game with the winner coming out with the lead in the standings as Cedar Grove (3-1, 2-0) takes on Salem (3-1, 2-0) in a 10:30 a.m. meeting at Hallford Stadium on Saturday. DeKalb Schools Cross Country: Week Three Results

Lakeside placed fifth in this week's races at Druid Hills Middle School.

The Southwest DeKalb Panthers and Lady Panthers won by double digits to sweep the second boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country races at the Druid Hills Middle School course on Tuesday. All five of the Panthers finished in the top 10 racers in the boys’ race led by a one-two finish from seniors Jacques Williams (18:15.12) and Christopher Morris (18:31.07) to out do Tucker 24-47. Martin Luther King Jr. was third with 103 and Towers fourth with 159. Brandon Dorsey was fourth in 18:46.80 while sophomores Khalid Johnson (20:25.52) and Shonto Williams (20:26.73) finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Miller Grove senior Rahiim Aponte was third in 18:40.19 and Tucker senior Ebenezer Agaro (19:00.89) was fifth to round out the top five …

DeKalb Middle Schools Football: Week Three Preview

Druid Hills is off this week with an 0-2 record after suffering a 44-13 drubbing at the hands of Stephenson last week.

The 2012 DeKalb County middle school football season moves into region play for the next four weeks beginning with the games on Saturday, Sept. 15. Teams will be jockeying for the two playoff berths from each region. Peachtree and Lithonia are both 2-0 on the season heading into their region opening clash at Adams Stadium at 10:30 on Saturday. Peachtree has allowed just eight points in wins over Druid Hills (28-0) and Tucker (22-8) in starting off the season 2-0. Lithonia is yet to allow a point in their 2-0 start with identical 30-0 wins over Renfroe and Henderson. Two big Region 4 games are on tap as Freedom (2-0) takes on Stone Mountain (1-1) and Miller Grove (1-1) and Chapel Hill (1-1) this weekend. Freedom is coming off a 20-0 win …

The school is looking for volunteers to help paint the walls red this week – prep for the new school year.

Got some spare time this week? Good Druid Hills Middle School needs your help (maybe). From a note sent out by the school's PTSA today: Looking for a way to get involved?  We need some help this week if possible.  We are looking for someone to paint some walls red-we have all the supplies up at school and all of the locations.(four total need to be done)  If you are interested in taking on a wall or two, please let me know as soon as possible!  Would love to have this project done by end of day Friday if we can!!!   Thanks in advance and please reply to me karenjacob@att.net if you can help! Olympic Track Star is Druid Hills Middle Principal's Nephew

Principal Robert Thorpe is an uncle to Angelo Taylor, the famed Atlanta track and field star who is competing in this summer's Olympic Games in London.

We've been telling you a lot about Tim Hornsby, the sprint kayaker and Lakeside High School graduate, who will later compete in the Olympics. But here's another Olympian with a root in the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area: Angelo Taylor, the nephew of Druid Hills Middle School Principal Robert Thorpe. Taylor was recently elected captain of Team USA's Olympic track and field squad. He will compete in the 400m Hurdles and won gold in the event in the 2000 and 2008 Olympics. He hopes to become the first Olympian to win three golds in the event.
