SHARE: Photos from the 2013 Presidential Inauguration

Are you attending the inauguration on Jan. 21? Upload your photos or videos and share the experience with your neighbors.

Hundreds of thousands of people will head towards the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 21 to witness President Barack Obama take the oath of office for his second term. On Jan. 20, 2009, Obama was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States. The theme for his first inauguration was “A New Birth of Freedom.” The ceremony honored the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. This year, the theme is “Faith in America's Future,” honoring the installation of the Statue of Freedom on the Capitol Dome 150 years ago in 1863. This year's inauguration will also commemorate Martin Luther King Jr., as Jan. 21 is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The president will honor King by taking the oath of office for his second term with his hand …

How Did Our Community Vote?

Data suggest the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area is solidly Obamaland.

Curious as to how your community voted in Tuesday's presidential election? Patch has put together and searchable database that allows you to check by voting precinct and ZIP. What you're likely to find is that the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area is pretty solidly supportive of President Barack Obama, though it's close in some areas. (The Lakeside High School precinct slightly favored Mitt Romney, for instance.) The primary ZIPs in this site's coverage area are 30033, 30329 and 30345, but you can search anything you want in DeKalb County. I was out at Clairmont Presbyterian Church in the early afternoon on Election Day and spoke with a number of voters there. You can look at the photos to see what they thought. Do the results surprise you…

I'll try to put something together on the charter amendment next week, Mark. And our editor got the presidential election results together. I'm not sure if they're up online yet, but I'll ask her where she got them. They may be up on Georgia's elections site already.   more ›

DeKalb Early Voting Totals Down From 2008

A total of 161,095 people cast early votes for the 2012 election, compared to 173,064 in 2008. The reason: the early voting period was longer in 2008.

There was a big rush of early voting last Friday, but overall fewer DeKalb County voters cast early ballots in this presidential election compared to 2008. Here are the numbers from the DeKalb Office of Voters Registration and Elections website. Early votes include mail-in votes and ballots cast in person. Patch asked DeKalb Elections Director Mary France Weeks why the numbers changed. This is her emailed response. Actually, the daily numbers were higher this year.  In 2008, early voting lasted 45 days – in 2012 it was reduced to 21 days.  In 2008, we only had one early  voting site for the full 45 day period – our main office on Memorial Drive.  In 2012, we had two areas in our main office, plus two additional satellite sites for the full…

There is a fairly simple explanation - there were fewer early voting days than last time.   more ›

Georgia Charter Schools Amendment: What Will My Vote Mean?

Tuesday's ballot includes a Georgia constitutional amendment to re-establish a state commission to approve charter schools. Your job is to decide if that's a good idea.

There aren't a lot of statewide issues on the ballot Nov. 6, but one has the potential to affect school districts, parents and children throughout Georgia. It's Amendment 1, and the ballot will say it "Provides for improving student achievement and parental involvement through more public charter school options." The question voters will answer yes or no to is, "Shall the Constitution of Georgia be amended to allow state or local approval of public charter schools upon the request of local communities?" So what does a yes vote mean? If the amendment passes, the state will create a commission that can approve charter schools in local communities, even if local school boards oppose them. Supporters of the amendment believe this is necessary …

Patch Poll: Dems Say Convention Gave Obama Bounce

Patch polled elected officials and activists in both parties to find out how they felt about their recent conventions. Both sides felt their own party got a boost, but Democrats expressed stronger feelings about the momentum they say Obama got.

Patch tapped our panels of influential Democrats and Republicans for twin polls, which were conducted this week. The results are unscientific. Democrats and Republicans were polled separately, with people from each party asked to focus on their own presidential candidate's performance and their own party's convention. Patch received responses from 31 Democrats and 56 Republicans. Do you have a suggestion for future polls of influential Republicans and Democrats? Tell us in the comments area below this article.

After T-SPLOST Failure, Democrats Worry About Georgia's Future

House Democrats are calling for a renewed effort after T-SPLOST failed to pass.

Georgians have voted down the TSPLOST referendum, which, had it passed, would have allocated a one percent sales tax increase over a 10-year span across 12 regions. Democratic Rep. Scott Holcomb told Patch after the vote: "I was not surprised by the vote. The leaders in this state have created a climate in which Georgians have little faith that government can do what it needs to do," he said. "I hope this vote does not hurt our state long-term economically." Voters who opposed the referendum were concerned the project was a negative return on investment, while those in districts outside Atlanta felt their tax dollars would be wasted. House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams wants her fellow legislators to tackle transportation again. “Georgia …

State "leadership" doesn't have to mean "pay for" or "finance" or "do" the end result--at least not ALL of it. Leadership can be ARTICULATING a vision, COOPERATION of public/private PARTNERSHIP and encouraging PHILANTHROPY and leveraging it-- or leadership can just simply be the WILL to push others to do it. Even INCENTIVES don't necessarily have to take money out of the public coffers, it can be…   more ›
