Viewfinder: Atlanta Symphony at Evansdale Elementary

Music students and professional musicians interacted at the school on Tuesday.

Members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra paid a visit to Evansdale Elementary on Tuesday morning, Jan. 22, as part of their Musicians in Schools program. "This is one of our favorite things to do," cellist Joel Dallow told Patch. "We give the kids a taste of the orchestra, and we have fun with it." A dozen players gave brief demonstrations of their respective instruments, took questions from the children and tested their musical knowledge. The ensemble played a few pieces as well, starting with a tango, which a boy in the audience correctly identified as originating in Argentina. Parent: Don't Shift Me from Lakeside High to Tucker

Under a proposal discussed Thursday, Evansdale Elementary School students would attend Tucker High School instead of Lakeside High School.

A local parent said Thursday she's upset that a redistricting proposal would shift her from Lakeside High School's attendance zone to Tucker High School. Jennifer Hatfield, PTA president at Evansdale Elementary School, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that under a draft proposal discussed at a Thursday DeKalb County Board of Education meeting, her children would no longer attend Lakeside High. From the AJC story: Hatfield suspected officials wanted to sneak the changes through. “I think they wanted to intentionally not give us time to mobilize,” she said.
