The school is one of just a small number of schools statewide that have received the designation for curriculum's strong in science, technology, engineering and math.
Education officials, corporate partners, school foundation officers and donors were on hand for a huge celebration last week at Henderson Mill Elementary School in the Lakeside High School cluster. The 48-year-old school was awarded the fifth STEM certification in Georgia. STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, and, as you can imagine, the curriculum is tailored to better prepare students for the ever-changing and challenging need for more "technocrats" in the United States. Less obvious is what officials (and indeed Henderson Mill stakeholders) view as STEM's promise to tear down barriers to learning in general, particularly as school populations have become more ethnically and economically diverse. That …

Reigning NASCAR champion Tony Stewart was joined by DeKalb County School District Superintendent Cheryl Atkinson and 47 students from Henderson Mill Elementary School on Wednesday as Office Depot donated 1,200 bags of school supplies to support students. "We are so incredibly appreciative of Office Depot’s generosity to our students," Atkinson said in a statement. "With more than 71 percent of our students receiving assistance for meals, school supplies are often luxuries that many families simply cannot afford. Before every race, like the one coming up this weekend, I'm certain that Mr. Stewart's pit crew stocks up on all the supplies they need to give Mr. Stewart a competitive edge so he comes out victorious. In the same manner, this …

Students at Henderson Mill Elementary had a surprise when they arrived for the first day of school this week – a visit from the Atlanta Hawks organization. Hawks cheerleaders, assistant coach Tyrone Hill and team mascots Harry the Hawk and SkyHawk were among those greeting students Monday. While the Hawks led the morning announcements and pledge of allegiance, their visit–in partnership with SCANA Energy–had another purpose. The Atlanta Hawks Foundation donated $2,500 during a rally to help the school create a community garden. Students will be able to plant, tend, harvest and sample produce from the garden. The school recently shifted its focus to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (“STEM”) as well as Student Health And Physical …

If voters approve the $475 million package the board of education passed Monday night, North Druid Hills could see new schools and renovations.
If DeKalb County voters in November approve a $475 million package of school construction and renovations across the county, the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area could see a host of new projects and renovations. The DeKalb County Board of Education passed a resolution Monday night, calling for a referendum on the sales tax program–known as SPLOST IV–to be presented to voters in Decatur and DeKalb and Fulton counties. The plan is part of a massive, ongoing reorganization of the DeKalb County School System that seeks to phase out smaller, community-oriented schools. In our community, residents could see the following projects: Some of those projects have been given qualifiers, however. The phasing and extent of renovations of Briar Vista …

There is enough blame to go around for just about everyone in this mess. Lets keep our eye on the prize please, our kids. I am hoping the GABOE removes DeKalb BOE and the new BOE replaces the superintendent and every incompetent educrat sucking the life out of our school system. When Miller County BOE was replaced that was what they did. I am also hoping that enough light has been shone on DCSS …   more ›
