Lakeside High School's Erin Shyr is among 26 students recently awarded college scholarship funding from DeKalb County. Shyr is featured in a video about the awards, along with a student from Southwest DeKalb High School and two Tucker High School students. Learn more about the scholarships, which were presented this past on Tuesday by DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis.

DeKalb county school district released the names of this year's valedictorians and salutatorians.
Stephanie Pham of Lakeside and Anna Dowling of Druid Hills are the high schools' 2013 valedictorians, respectively, the DeKalb County School System announced Tuesday. Lakeside's Paul Choi and Druid Hills' Jason Terry are this year's salutatorians. A pianist and member of several school groups, Pham is "leaning toward" Emory, according to information from the district (included in Pham's list of accomplishments: "She also bakes delicious cookies!"). A leader in orchestra and on the tennis court, Choi is off to Georgia Tech. Dowling will attend Pomona College in California, and Terry is University of Georgia-bound. The Lakeside Vikings 2013 high school soccer season came to an end on Saturday as host and No. 1 ranked McIntosh pulled away for a 6-1 victory in the Class AAAAA quarterfinals. McIntosh which had defeated Lakeside 1-0 earlier in the season got out to a 1-0 lead only to see the Vikings score to tie the game at 1-1. The Lakeside goal was just the second scored all season against the McIntosh defense which has led the team to a perfect 21-0 season heading into the semifinals. McIntosh got two more goals in the first half on the way to a 3-1 lead at the break. Lakeside gave up a quick goal to start the second half as the Vikings went on to fall by the final of 6-1. The Lakeside graduate will compete in Saturday's K1 200m heats.
Lakeside graduate and 2012 Olympic kayaker Tim Hornsby will compete Saturday in the Sprint World Cup No. 1 in Hungary. Lakeside goalie Susjed Garcia dove to his left and got just a piece of Delvin Bickham’s penalty kick shot to push it wide of the goal and clinch the Vikings’ 2-1 victory (4-2 in penalty kicks) over Heritage-Conyers on Tuesday at Hallford Stadium. The win propelled the Vikings (14-4-2) into the Class AAAAA state playoffs’ quarterfinals against today’s (Wednesday) winner of No. 1 ranked McIntosh (19-0-0) and Evans (12-5-0) which is tentatively set for Saturday. The Lady Vikings shut out Cambridge to advance to the Class AAAAA girls’ state playoffs second round.
The Lakeside Lady Vikings and Druid Hills Lady Red Devils captured one-goal wins as they surged into the state playoffs on Tuesday. The Lady Vikings (18-0-1) shutout Cambridge (9-8-0) 2-0 at Hallford Stadium to advance to the Class AAAAA girls’ state playoffs second round. Lakeside dominated the first half of play by keeping the ball on Cambridge’s half of the field most of the half, but had only one good shot on goal through the first 24 minutes of play. Cambridge got one good look as well but Lakeside goalie Ashley Graham made an easy save out front at the 16:27 mark of the first half. Tim Hornsby crossed the finish line one quarter of a second before his competitor in the senior men's kayak 200m race.
Lakeside High School graduate and 2012 Olympic kayaker Tim Hornsby maintained his top spot in the men's 200m kayak race standings this weekend, securing him a competition spot on the U.S. team this year. From a statement from the national team on the event held over the weekend in Oklahoma City: London 2012 Olympian Tim Hornsby (Atlanta, Ga.) maintained his spot atop the senior men's kayak 200m standings by crossing the line one quarter of a second before Ryan Dolan (Kailua, Hawaii). Chris Miller of Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club finished third in that distance, but first in the 1000m Final. Miller teamed up with Stanton Collins (Gainesville, Ga.) to claim both the K2 200m and 1000m races. Read also:

Tim Hornsby will compete this weekend in trials to determine who will compete for Team USA in the upcoming 2013 competition season.
Lakeside High School graduate and 2012 Olympic kayaker Tim Hornsby will fight this weekend to represent Team USA through the upcoming 2013 competition season. Hornsby, 27, who graduated in 2004, is at the Oklahoma City Boathouse District, which is hosting the 2013 USA Canoe/Kayak Sprint National Team Trials on Friday and Saturday. The two-day competition will include racing events to select the Senior, Junior and Under-23 National Teams and will feature ParaCanoe racing, which will make its inaugural appearance at the Paralympic Games in Brazil in 2016.
