Patch, Other Websites Go Dark Friday for Sandy Hook

North Druid Hills-Briarcliff Patch and Patch sites nationwide will participate in an online moment of silence in memory of the victims of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

North Druid Hills-Briarcliff Patch will go dark at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 21. And so will thousands of other websites across the country. Patch and other online companies are taking part of an online moment of silence in memory of the victims of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The event will last one minute.  As of 6 p.m. Thursday, more than 130,000 people took the pledge on Causes.com. Websites wishing to participate can embed a green ribbon on their site, like the one you see in this article. Twitter users are also asked to use the hashtag #momentforSandyHook to show their support. Can We Make Metro Atlanta Schools Safer?

Patch Question of the Week: After Newtown, do you feel safe sending your kids to school?

It's the issue that's on many people's minds: could the horror that visited Newtown last week happen here? Are our schools safe from such violence? And what can we do - if anything at all - to make them safer? Metro Atlanta schools rushed to reassure parents that their systems are prepared in the event of an emergency. APS Superintendent Dr. Erroll Davis said city of Atlanta schools have implemented safety drills and other procedures that are designed to protect their students. Nonetheless, he asked parents to always remain vigilant and alert school officials if they see something suspicious. DeKalb County schools also have a system in place for notifying parents, locking down schools and having law enforcement and school officials on …
