The annual event by the North Briarcliff Civic Association will be held at Hawthorne Elementary School on Saturday.
The North Briarcliff Civic Association will hold its annual CommUnity Day on Saturday at Hawthorne Elementary School. The event, which will run from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., will include free ice cream and a fire engine, plus there will additional events at Mary Scott Nature Park at the same time and a guided walk at 12:30 p.m. The association's Neighborhood Watch program will also be present with Scruffy, a police mascot, and several DeKalb County officers. The watch program will also have Home I.D. fingerprinting kits for parents to use with their children at home. The kits are used by the FBI and police to help reunite missing children with their families, according to an association email.

The burglary occurred in the Country Squire/Pangborn area Wednesday.
A burglar distracted an elderly North Briarcliff woman while his partner robbed her home Wednesday, the North Briarcliff Civic Association said. The association sent the following note out to its residents Sunday: Country Squire/ Pangborn area - Wed. afternoon: Elderly neighbor was collecting her mail & trash can from the street. A white pickup truck with a hispanic male inside approached her and asked if her husband was at home. Realizing she was home alone, he told her they were working behind her house and that the neighbor wanted a few trees/limbs removed. He talked to her for about 10 minutes in her backyard. The North Briarcliff Civic Association sent a note out to residents Thursday night alerting them of an increase in holiday crime (based on what they've seen on Crimemapping.com). They also included a few details about incidents in our area – though not necessarily in North Briarcliff – that are worth noting. It was a down week for crime, but it may not stay that way. Here are some tips.
Crime over the last weeked seemed relatively down across most of the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area. A few isolated car break-ins and whatnot, but fewer than is ordinary. (There was an armed robbery near Shamrock Plaza on Lawrenceville Highway on Sunday, and I'll try to get to the bottom of that Monday.) Though no official moves have been made, a local community leader told the newspaper residents in both communities have been inspired by the incorporation of Brookhaven.
Residents in the Sagamore Hills and North Briarcliff communities are exploring cityhood options as new municipalities in northern DeKalb County place more fianancial pressure on residents in unincorporated areas, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday. The communities have been inspired by the recent vote to incorporate Brookhaven's 49,000 residents, the newspaper reported. Two ladders and a garden tiller were stolen from two different homes this month.
The DeKalb County Police Department finally updated its crime map this week (hopefully for good), so I'll be able to return to some crime reporting tomorrow. But this came in over email Tuesday from the North Briarcliff Civic Association. The North Briarcliff Civic Association reported to residents that a car break-in there was one of several following the school's prom night.
Not sure how the two could be connected, but the North Briarcliff Civic Association sent a note out to residents about a car break-in on at Tristan Circle and Galahad Drive on Sunday morning after Lakeside High School's prom. It should be noted that prom was held at Thalia N. Carlos Hellenic Community Center on Saturday night. From the email: On Sunday, May 6, 2012, between the hours of 1:30AM-10:00AM our SUV's window was broken and they stole the GPS and coin holder (both hidden in closed compartment). "The house was secure; someone had to have been watching and waiting for the homeowner to leave," the neighborhood association told members Monday.
The North Briarcliff Civic Association sent the following notice out to residents this morning regarding a burglary Sunday: A house in the 2500 Block of Brookdale Drive was broken into last night/Sunday between 6:30-7:30 p.m. The homeowner was away from home just that hour. The thief broke a pane on a window in the back of the house, lifted the window, entered the house and took a television and printer and scattered some things around. The house was secure; someone had to have been watching and waiting for the homeowner to leave. The police responded quickly and will of course do their best to catch whoever did this. Two break-ins, one on Sylvan Ramble, the other in Bradford Square, have occurred in the last week.
Two cars have been broken into within a week in the North Briarcliff community, and items were stolen, according to its civic association. One occurred on Sylvan Ramble, and the other happened two nights ago in Bradford Square. The association gave its residents tips to help keep you from becoming a victim: - Close and lock all vehicle entry points, at all times. - Take all valuables out of vehicle, at all times. That includes GPS, phone, phone accessories, spare change, laptop, briefcase, shopping bags, etc. - Report all suspicious persons, vehicles, and behavior to police by calling 911 at the time when the activity is observed. Some Decatur residents are urging the city to do something significant about coyotes in town. Might North Druid Hills require similar assistance?
Coyotes attacking pets and alarming residents are roaming around Decatur, and others have been seen in the North Briarcliff area. A Decatur woman told Channel 2 news that a coyote killed her cat recently, and she's trying to get the city to do something about it whether it means trapping or killing, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. North Druid Hills and Briarcliff residents are well-acquainted with coyotes, however. They're almost routinely spotted prancing around the area. I am an older lady and keep my door locked. I lock it behind me when I go out and again when I enter. I have a big dog and a Remington 12 gauge and I know how to use it.
