"I think we're being used by both sides unfortunately," Marlow's Tavern's general manager in Northlake said this week.
A Northlake restaurant scheduled to hold a fundraiser for the Lakeside City Alliance on Tuesday did not back out of the event after some angry Tucker residents protested the restaurant's involvement on Facebook, the restaurant's general manager said this week. The alliance announced the cancellation of the April 2 event last week after it said residents on several anti-alliance Facebook pages and groups threatened to protest Marlow's Tavern at 4156 Lavista Road if it went forward with the event. The alliance called out two Facebook sites, Tucker Town Talk and Save Tucker From Lakeside City, specifically. "Marlow's Tavern is a great neighborhood business, and we understand their concern for protecting their business from negative media …

The Lakeside City Alliance canceled the Tuesday event after several Facebook groups threatened to boycott and protest Marlow's Tavern in Northlake where the event was to be held.
A Lakeside City Alliance fundraiser planned for Tuesday in Northlake was canceled last week after several anti-alliance Facebook groups threatened to boycott and protest the restaurant holding the event, the alliance said. From a newsletter the alliance emailed to supporters Sunday: We are disappointed to announce that our event at Marlow's Tavern (4/2/13) has been cancelled. We have learned that Marlow's was threatened with a boycott, picketing and media coverage of the protest if they allowed LCA to hold the event at the restaurant. This effort to strong-arm Marlow's was assisted by several anti-LCA Facebook groups, including "Save Tucker from Lakeside" and "Tucker Town Talk". Marlow's Tavern is a great neighborhood business, and we …

Again, Fran, I see no evidence of a threat toward business profits by what was said, "tell them not to ..." was not followed up with any sort of "Or else we will...." You have a statement made by someone, not Ms. Miller, telling others to email or call and to tell the owner something. But, the owner/manager stated that he received no such calls or emails. There was no threat. To imply otherwise …   more ›
The April 2 event will be held at Marlow's Tavern.
The Lakeside City Alliance will hold a fundraiser next week in Northlake. The event will be held at Marlow's Tavern, 4156 Lavista Road, on Tuesday, April 2 from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m., according to a notice the group sent out the its followers Saturday. The Lakeside City Alliance is studying the creation of a new city loosely based around the Lakeside High School attendance zone area that would reach from North Druid Hills Road to west Tucker. The alliance said last week it has already raised about $7,000 of the roughly $30,000 it will need for a state-mandated cityhood study by the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia. The incident occurred at the Wells Fargo bank on Lavista Road on Tuesday afternoon.
The FBI is looking for a man it said robbed a series of banks and stores throughout the metro Atlanta area, including a Wells Fargo in Northlake on Tuesday afternoon. The bureau issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for Michael Jerome Winfield, 46, of Atlanta for the armed robbery of the bank at 4099 Lavista Road, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. DeKalb County's police report said the suspect walked into the bank at about 4:30 p.m., asked about opening a new account and was directed to an employee. The suspect pulled out a black handgun and placed it on the counter with the gun barrel pointed at the employee. "Put all the money in big bills in a bag, and don't put any dye pack or tracking in the bag," the suspect said. The …

Yikes. This mall isn't THAT bad, even though it was much better a few years ago. It's getting worse by the day, though. New tenants you've never heard of (Crush? Designer Styles?) is usually a death knell.   more ›
The bank has moved into their brand new location on Lavista Road between Starbucks and Chick-Fil-A in the Northlake Festival Shopping Center.
Tucker’s annual holiday festival got a ho-ho-whole lot bigger and better this year.
The evening started last Thursday with the anxious anticipation of parents, cameras in hand, waiting for the Northlake Children’s Chorus to ring in this year’s holiday season. Tucker resident Jeff Sears watched while daughter Annabelle sang "Jingle Bells" and "Christmas is Coming" with her fellow carolers. “The best yet,” he said. “They picked a good day of the week, in conjunction with the (Tucker) Farmer’s Market. More people are here this year.” Ester Davis agreed this year has been the best Christmas on Main Street yet. “We come to almost every event downtown. It makes you feel like you live in a small town. This is just so nice,” said Davis. The new additions of live music, more food and vendors is all thanks to OTTMA, the Old Town …

Stores such as Kohl's and Macy's, which opened at midnight, did especially well.
Northlake Mall turned out a strong Black Friday, a mall spokeswoman said last week. Stores that opened early, such as Kohl's and Macy's, which opened at midnight, did especially well, spokeswoman Shelley Korenbrot told Neighbor Newspapers. From the story: “Our stores that opened midnight had a great run,” said mall spokeswoman Shelley Korenbrot. “Kohl’s had a long line that wrapped around the building to go in and everyone was going after their door-buster items. Macy’s also opened at midnight and they did really well on their door-buster items too.” Sears opened even earlier at 8 p.m. Thursday. “They had a ton of people waiting for the electronic specials,” Korenbrot said. “They sold out of those." The regional chain, which started in Toco Hill, will move into Northlake Festival early next year.
I've written a bit about the struggling commercial corridor up there in Northlake. (Northlake Festival Shopping Center and such.) I was just up there yesterday, however, eating a little Panda Express while reading and finishing up on some work, and, dare I say, it looked like the community might be rebounding a bit. And with that, here's some news that Uncle Maddio's Pizza Joint will move into Northlake Festival sometimes early next year, according to Tomorrow's News Today. From the story: Atlanta-based Uncle Maddio's Pizza Joint plans to open sometime early next year at Northlake Festival. Uncle Maddio's at Northlake will be located in a portion of what was once The Sport Shoe, and was most recently a CLEAR Wireless Internet location. …

A little OT here and I may be dating myself here, but I remember when there were cows in the field where Northlake Festival is. The WSB tower has been there as long as I can remember though. I'd rather have the cows back than have it continue as is. And while we're at it, when are they going to do something about that Kroger? It is dated and dangerous. We go to the Kroger down @ Toco Hills - "the…   more ›

Any city movement that might cause people to be so upset that they would even consider a picket is more cause for worry than anything else. The businesses should be concerned about their commercial taxes going up by 30% which would be expected for the city to survive. But, we'll find out for sure when the feasibility study is complete, I'm sure. That is, if they plan to make it public.   more ›
