Oak Grove Elementary Students Get Honorable Mention in Clean Air Art Competition

The students, 6 and 7, were recognized for their comic strip entries.

Two Oak Grove Elementary students got honorable mention in the Clean Air Campaign's Young Lungs at Work Art Competition, the Champion Newspaper reports. The students are 7-year-old Eshal Siddiqui for his work, "Clean Air" and six-year-old Payten Shoemake for "Kids Rock to Keep Clean Air." Emery Walhen, 10, of Kittredge Magnet School for High Achievers  won first place prize in the Comic Strip Challenge of the competition for her submission about car pollution. Kittredge also received a $300 donation to its science and arts programs, the Champion Newspaper reports.

Thurmond: Voters Partially Responsible for School Board Strife

"I'm here to correct some of the mistakes they made but also to correct some of the mistakes you made," the interim superintendent said at Oak Grove Elementary School on Wednesday.

DeKalb County voters are partially responsible for the strife and discord that has pushed the board of education to the brink of its own removal, interim schools Superintendent Michael Thurmond said Wednesday. Because voters elected the board members, they must take some responsibility for the state of the board and the school system as it struggles to regain approval from its accreditors, he said, speaking before the Emory Lavista Parent Council at Oak Grove Elementary School. Was a crooked politican when he served as Commissioner of the Department of Labor. Unless it was the intent to continue to produce uneducated children, I can't imagine how Thurmond got himself appointed to anything having to do with education.   more ›

Superintendent Thurmond to Speak at Oak Grove Elementary

Interim head of DeKalb's school system will make his first appearance next week.

Michael Thurmond, interim superintendent of the DeKalb County School System, will appear at Oak Grove Elementary School on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. This will be his first public appearance, aside from school board meetings, since being appointed on Feb. 8. He will make a speech and take questions from parents. "He understands people want to be assured that the board is going in the right direction," Board Vice Chairman Jim McMahan told Patch by telephone Friday morning. "I appreciate his willingness to get out there."

Oak Grove Elementary Among Top 10 Percent Statewide

It's one of 13 schools in the Top 10 percent, according to the Georgia State Department of Education.

Oak Grove Elementary School is one of 13 schools in Georgia named among the Top 10 percent in achievement. Oak Grove Elementary ranked at No. 4. Each school will receive a $1,000 check from Georgia Natural Gas to use as the school wishes. "These schools are showing that excellence can be achieved when they focus on providing a world-class education for their students," State School Superintendent John Barge said in a statement. Oak Grove Elementary Temporarily Locked Down Friday

Lakeside also locked down in response to nearby home invasion.

Oak Grove Elementary was locked down early Friday afternoon in response to a reported home invasion near the school. Walter Woods, communications director for the DeKalb County Board of Education, also said that Lakeside High School was locked down in the early afternoon as well. Both schools were on lockdown for about five minutes, Woods said. Public information officials for the DeKalb County Police Department were unable to confirm the incident. However, the DeKalb County Schools Police Department confirmed that Oak Grove was locked down early Friday afternoon. The department did not confirm that Lakeside was locked down. About 420 people–mostly students–walked from Oak Grove United Methodist Church to the elementary school before the first bell.

About 420 people participated in Oak Grove Elementary School's walk from Oak Grove United Methodist Church to the school this morning – part of a celebration of International Walk to School Day.

Oak Grove Elementary Students to Walk in Celebration Tomorrow

About 450 students will walk from Oak Grove United Methodist Church to the school at 7:15am.

Oak Grove Elementary School will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day tomorrow. Approximately 450 students from Oak Grove Elementary will be walking and rolling to school along with parents, teachers and community leaders. DeKalb County Commissioner Jeff Rader, District 2, and OneDekalb Coordinator Bettye Davis will be joining them. The event will begin at 7:15am with kids, parents and community leaders walking from the Oak Grove United Methodist Church. Walkers will arrive at the school between 7:30 and 7:40. If voters approve the $475 million package the board of education passed Monday night, North Druid Hills could see new schools and renovations.

If DeKalb County voters in November approve a $475 million package of school construction and renovations across the county, the North Druid Hills-Briarcliff area could see a host of new projects and renovations. The DeKalb County Board of Education passed a resolution Monday night, calling for a referendum on the sales tax program–known as SPLOST IV–to be presented to voters in Decatur and DeKalb and Fulton counties. The plan is part of a massive, ongoing reorganization of the DeKalb County School System that seeks to phase out smaller, community-oriented schools.
