Those Explosions You Heard Monday Night? Hindu Diwali Celebration

Patel Plaza celebrated the end of Diwali, a yearly Hindu festival, with a fireworks display Monday night.

Several local community Facebook groups were atwitter with activity Monday night after residents heard what they thought were explosions in the area. But no need to worry. Patel Plaza, the fast-growing Indian shopping center on Church Street, was hosting a celebration of the end of Diwali, a five-day Hindu festival known as the "festival of lights" that began this year on Nov. 13. The plaza launched the fireworks display last night, however, because DeKalb County police gave them permission for that date, one of the retailers told North Druid Hills-Briarcliff Patch. 'Prometheus' an Epic Tale for Sci-Fi Lovers

Sci-fi lovers and fans of the original "Alien" movie, get ready for a 3D space tale that is out of this world.

A crew sets out to find the origins of man on a planet far, far away and finds thrills, frights and mammoth landscapes for the audience in Prometheus. Director Ridley Scott, of the first Alien movie and Blade Runner, put together a great thriller here. Noomi Rapace (the original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) plays an archaeologist who, along with her boyfriend, is sent to find what some believe are the origins of humans on a faraway planet. Their mission is overseen by shady corporate big wigs Guy Pearce and Charlize Theron with most of the corporate experiments being conducted by scene-stealer android David played by Michael Fassbender. Report: Large Expansion Headed for Patel Plaza

"At least 20 new businesses" are set to open in the Church Street shopping center by the end of the year, according to Decatur Dispatch.

Patel Brothers, the Indian grocery in Patel Plaza, is in the middle of an expansion to their Church Street shopping center that could see 20 new businesses by the end of the year, according to Decatur Dispatch. The report, which isn't available online, said construction of a new two-story building is underway, and the second story would be dedicated to healthcare businesses. Rakesh Patel, one of the Patel brothers, also told the publication it's considering purchasing an adjacent automotive dealership lot to build an adult living community that would help feed the shopping center as well. Endless Delights at Thali

Thali Indian Vegetarian Cuisine, located in Patel Plaza, serves up all-you-can-eat prix fixe delights.

Located in the freshly remodeled Patel Plaza is the new Thali, serving up nearly endless dishes of delights. Thali, named for the silver serving platters often used in Indian cuisine, is a long and open space with a red, orange and gold theme. There are tables, a raised platform featuring tables with very comfortable cushions and a seating area that works like the no-shoes-allowed tatami mat rooms in Japanese restaurants. Large parties are welcome at Thali, which also caters for parties that can reach into the hundreds. The friendly, helpful staff is eager to help diners navigate the style of eating at Thali.
