County Looking at Another Land Purchase in Oak Grove?

After the county agreed to buy about 6 acres in the community earlier this month, Commissioner Jeff Rader said he's also interested in 17 acres nearby.

Could Oak Grove soon see a second land purchase for a future park two weeks after DeKalb County agreed to buy about 6 acres on Lavista Road? District 2 Commissioner Jeff Rader wants the county to review a 17-acre tract owned by Ed Nelms Jr. about a mile east off Lavista Road, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Nelms is asking for $6 million for the land, below the $7.5 million price tag he said he was offering residential developers. The land–as well as the 6 acres the county purchased July 12–is part of the Mount Zion community, a black farming community that emerged after Emancipation. Rader has said he's actively seeking to purchase land in his district because it's one of the most well-developed areas in the county, but it wasn…

Nope, Tom. You were right. It's District 2. I was moving too fast that morning. You write something correctly for years, and then when you're not paying attention... Regardless, I've added the correction. Thanks for the note.   more ›

DeKalb Commission Defers Controversial LaVista Land Purchase

The board of commissioners will return to the issue on June 28.

DeKalb County commissioners again deferred a decision to purchase more than six acres on LaVista Road for a future park, as discussion continued to center on whether the parcel is overpriced. "Three of the four parcels of land on this tract are landlocked; only one has an entrance and exit onto LaVista Road," Calvin Hicks, chief county tax appraiser, told the board. "We have to consider each parcel separately, and those entrances increase the value of the overall tract." District 2 Commissioner Jeff Rader made a motion that the board approve the purchase, but District 5 Commissioner Lee May made a substitute motion to defer the item for two weeks. "I'm concerned that this property is appraised for $400,000, that we're going to purchase for…

Also, the distinction in the meaning of "park" is an important one. I think alot of times the terms park and greenspace are used interchangeably to the confusion of some. This will be purchased from greenspace money that only establishes this as greenspace, preserved land. However, this land does adjoin approx 4 acres of other undeveloped wooded area adjacent to Coralwood ES that has had nature …   more ›

County to Vote on Land Purchase for New Park in Oak Grove

If the board of commissioners approves it, the county could end up purchasing about 6 acres on Lavista Road.

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners will vote tomorrow on the purchase of more than 6 acres on Lavista Road for a future park. The total cost of the land is not to exceed about $2 million, according to a draft of the proposal released last week. The land will be paid for with about $1 million from the 2001 Parks Bond Acquisition Fund for District 2 and another $1 million from the countywide 2006 parks bond issue. No designs have been set for the park, District 2 Commissioner Jeff Rader said. But the county plans to purchase the land to create a park with walking trails, according to the proposal. The land is "historically significant," the proposal said, "and an interpretation of original family ownership is planned." "We want to be …

Mr. Rader - Good work on adding parks to our district, we need more green space. Please investigate adding sidewalks to project on Lavista Road near proposed park. It is currently a safety hazard to walk on Lavista Road between Pangborn Road and Oakgrove Road.   more ›
