Obama Rocks Morehouse in the Rain

The live coverage is over, but replay the live blog to see what all the hype was about.

President Barack Obama gave the 129th commencement address speech on a wet and rainy Sunday afternoon, May 19th, at Morehouse College. Obama began his remarks to an excited yet wet crowd, most of whom had been seated as early as 6 am. at approximately 11:30 am. The sky opened just before the speech began, and the crowd was treated to a steady downpour throughout. Obama quipped that, “I would be out there with you, but the Secret Service gets nervous.” Obama was greeted with a big cheer when he emerged from a building adjacent to the stage with Morehouse College president John Silvanus Wilson, a former White House aide. The invocation was given by Rev. Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous church. …

@Kevin You make a fair point. Encouraging a "victim mentality" is counter-productive to minority progress. @Stephen: You, too, make a good point. Decatur Welcomes Obama: See Gallery, Share Your Photos

Obama praised Decatur's pre-school programs during his visit on Thursday. Hundreds turned out to see the president.

Everybody wanted to see the chief executive. People lined the streets to watch his motorcade pass by on its way to the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center and hundreds gathered outside the rec center. Some held signs to welcome Obama, others took him to task for allowing the use of drones in Afghanistan. Did you see the president? Did you make a sign to welcome him? Share your photos and video clips with your neighbors …

It's inside a public school gym. It's more likely that only 500 were permitted to welcome the president.   more ›

News Nearby: Obama's Visit Excites Decatur

The city makes plans for the president, who will stop Thursday at the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center before making remarks at the Decatur Recreation Center.

Willie Mae Browner won't go far to see President Obama during his Thursday visit to the College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center in Decatur. She lives right next door, a fact not lost on friends and family in this heavily Democratic community. "Some of them want to spend the night," Browner said. "As many will get in as we can fit." Almost everybody in Decatur is buzzing over the president's visit. He'll arrive at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta in the late morning, stop at the Learning Center and make remarks at the Decatur Recreation Center before heading back to Washington in the afternoon. Decatur is a solidly Democratic town in Red State Georgia. Though the state went for Romney in the November election, Decatur residents …

Perhaps 0bama could visit the esteemed dekalb county school board and see how effectively public dollars can be managed, and the exceptional learning successes it can reap when managed so well. It might be a good place for him to catch a nap...like other board members do. no amount of money into early, middle or late school education can overcome administrative incompetence...and nothing has …   more ›
