St. Pius Student Athletes Ink College Letters of Intent

Emily Morrison, a volleyball player, will head to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Natasha Sherrod, a softball player, signed with Presbyterian College in South Carolina.

St. Pius has had two senior student athletes sign national letters-of-intent with NCAA Division I colleges during the fall signing period. Emily Morrison (Norcross) and Natasha Sherrod (Atlanta) will further their athletic careers in volleyball and softball, respectively. Morrison, an outside hitter and four-year varsity letter winner, signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga beginning in the fall of 2013. She has been selected first team AAA all-state for three consecutive years and has led the Golden Lion volleyball squad to back-to-back state runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2012. St. Pius Volleyball Enters State Playoffs Wednesday

The state playoffs begin for the third-ranked volleyball team this week while the season ended in the first round of the state playoffs last week for the softball squad. Football continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll and are back in action after having the week off. Boys’ cross country has climbed to the top spot in the ga.milesplit.com all-classification poll while maintaining its No. 1-ranking in the AAA poll. Girls’ cross country remains No. 2 in the AAA poll. The Golden Lion volleyball team will enter the state playoffs this Wednesday as the No. 2 seed out of Area 5-AAA after dropping the area title game to Blessed Trinity. Coach Paul Standard's football team continues to site in the No. 5 spot in a regional poll.

The past week in sports at St. Pius featured a coaching milestone as head football coach Paul Standard recorded his 100th career victory as his team continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Georgia High School Football Daily AAA poll. Volleyball has occupied the No. 3 spot in the AAA poll by scoreatl.com for most of the season while boys’ cross country remains in the top spot in the ga.milesplit.com AAA poll and No. 6 in its all-classification poll. As the end of September approaches, the end of the regular season is just around the corner for softball and volleyball. The football team continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll while volleyball stays put at No. 3 in the scoreatl.com poll. Boys’ cross country reclaimed the top spot in the ga.milesplit.com AAA poll and climbed to No. 5 in the all-classification poll. St. Pius Football Loses First Regular Season Game in Two Years

The Golden Lions lost 21-14 to then-No. 5 Thomson.

St. Pius finished the first week in which all six fall sport teams saw action.  Competition cheerleading opened its season at Meadowcreek last weekend.  Volleyball continues to sit in the No. 3 spot in the AAA Scoreatl.com poll.  Football dropped to No. 5 in the Georgia High School Football Daily/Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA pool. In the ga.milesplit.com cross country polls, the Golden Lion boys' squad dropped to No. 2 in AAA and No. 7 in the all-classification poll. St. Pius Football Crushes No. 5 North Oconee 50-14

Football moved to No. 2 in the AJC AAA poll, and the Golden Lions volleyball team occupies the No. 3 spot in the AAA Scoreatl.com/AJC poll.

Five of the six St. Pius fall sports saw action last week. Football moved up to No. 2 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll after an impressive win Friday night. The volleyball team continues to occupy the No. 3 spot in the AAA Scoreatl.com/AJC poll. The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams are in the top spot and No. 2 spot in AAA in their respective ga.milesplit.com polls while the male harriers are No. 2 in the all-classification poll. As the long, Labor Day weekend approached the athletic program at St. Pius, only three teams saw action with only two on the weekend. Football, ranked No. 4 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll opened its season while the third-ranked volleyball squad traveled to Huntsville, AL for a two-day tournament. The boys' and girls' cross country teams continue to sit in the top spot and No. 2 spot in AAA in their respective ga.milesplit.com polls while the male harriers are No. 2 in the all-classification poll. The football team lifted the lid on its season with a 21-3 victory over Westminster. The Golden Lions have four sports programs ranked in the Top 10 in the Atlanta metro area.

Last week, two more St. Pius athletic teams began the regular season as both cross country teams opened up the 2012 season. The Golden Lions have four programs ranked in the top ten in their respective polls with boys' cross country sitting atop the AAA ga.milesplit.com poll. Girls' cross country is No. 2 in the same poll while volleyball is the third-ranked team in the Scoreatl.com/Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll. Football, which opens the 2012 season this week, is No. 4 in the AJC poll. Boys' cross country finished tied for first with Mill Creek at the Walton/Peachtree Ridge Stage Races in Duluth. The St. Pius volleyball and softball teams opened up regular season play last week as cross country joins the fray this weekend with the opening races for both squads. Football, ranked No. 4 in the pre-season Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll will lift the lid on its season Aug. 31. Competition cheer continues to perfect its routine in anticipation of the opening meet in mid-September. St. Pius 2012 Athletic Preview

Head football coach Paul Standard enters his 12th season with a 96-34 record and a strong returning corps of players.

Although classes began on August 10 at St. Pius X Catholic High School, the fall athletic teams were already in full swing with pre-season practice. All six Golden Lion fall programs captured region titles and advanced to the state playoffs last season. The 2012-13 campaign sees the Golden Lions enter Region 6-AAA after the last round of re-classification in which the Georgia High School Association moved to a six-classification system. St. Pius also finished second in the overall standings of the Regions Directors' Cup for 2011-12.
