All-State Softball Team Honors Lakeside Pitcher

Marie Collop received an honorable mention to the 2011 AAAA all-state team.

Marie Collop, starting pitcher for the Lakeside softball team, received an honorable mention to the 2011 AAAA all-state team. Collop was the only player in Region 6 selected for the team, propelled by her 13-1 record and 1.59 earned run average. The pitcher also batted .633 with a 1.06 slugging percentage. Collop led a standout Lady Viking squad that was Region 6 runner-up with losses only to Marist in the regular season and region tournament. Both Lakeside and Marist fell in the first round of state tournament. Coach Tricia Newmyer complimented her all-state standout. "Marie is a great leader and has an incredible work ethic," she said. Lakeside Softball Players Selected to All-Region First Team

Susanne Boden, Aubrey Blackstock and Marie Collop were selected, again, for the All-Region 6-AAAA softball First Team.

This just in from Susan Blackstock, booster club president for the Lakeside softball team: Lakeside senior Susanne Boden and juniors Aubrey Blackstock and Marie Collop were again selected for the All-Region 6-AAAA softball First Team. All three were selected for the first-team during 2010 as well. At a recent end-of-season awards banquet, Susanne was awarded the Viking Award for academic and athletic proweress.  Marie received the MVP award and Aubrey received the Coach's Award.  In addition to playing high school ball for the Lady Vikings, Susanne currently plays for the 18U Lynx. Marie plays for 18-U Team Georgia and Aubrey plays for 16U-GA Xtreme. All three hope to play softball in college. Lakeside High's varsity softball team lost …

St. Pius' Schneider Signs to Play Softball at Brenau

Schneider has been a varsity player since her freshman year and has started every game at third base or catcher.

St. Pius X Catholic High School senior Elizabeth "Liz" Schneider has signed a letter-of-intent to play softball at Brenau University in Gainesville. Beginning as a freshman, Schneider has been a member of the varsity softball team and has started in every game of her career at third base or catcher. "I am very excited to play for the Golden Tigers and study at Brenau," Schneider said. "I like the positive, competitive attitude of the coaches as well as the overall excellence of the softball program. I fell in love with the philosophy that Brenau provides for its students." St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

Volleyball and softball each captured titles over the weekend and head to the playoffs this weekend.

St. Pius celebrated two league titles last week as volleyball took the Area 5-AAA crown and softball captured the Region 5-AAA championship last week in their respective tournaments. Both sports have won four consecutive titles and will host state playoff events this week. Idle last week, football moved up a spot to No. 2 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution rankings while slipping to No. 5 in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association poll. The Golden Lions boys’ cross country team was also off this weekend and continues to be the top-ranked team in AAA the ga.milesplit.com poll and moved up in the All-Classification poll to No. 5. Volleyball and softball are top seeds in their tournaments.

Two sports completed their respective regular seasons last week at St. Pius. Volleyball (No. 1-AAA) and softball are the top seeds in their tournaments with softball opening with a win in the first round. The Golden Lions boys’ cross country team continues to be the top-ranked team in the AAA ga.milesplit.com poll and moved up in the All-Classification poll to No. 5. The girls’ cross country team retained its second spot in the AAA poll. Football continues to sit in the No. 3 spot in both the Atlanta Journal-Constitution rankings as well as the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association poll. Lakeside Softball Moves on to 4-A State Tourney

The Lady Vikings clinched second in Region 6A and a berth at the state softball tournament.

The Lakeside Lady Vikings defeated Tucker on Tuesday 11-0 in five innings to clinch second in Region 6A and a berth at the AAAA state softball tournament. They go to regionals, but no matter what happens there, they automatically qualified for state by finishing second in the region’s regular season. The Lady Vikes won Thursday’s non-regional contest against Stone Mountain 14-3. Marist hosts the regional tournament during the week of Oct. 3. Marist and Lakeside are seeded No. 1 and No. 2. The Lady Vikings have a bye on Monday and play on Tuesday against either Chamblee or Dunwoody pending the outcome of Monday’s game. The Golden Lions' top-ranked volleyball squad continued its 19-game winning streak, and the football team defeated North Hall 38-13.

St. Pius fans had more to celebrate last week as all of the sports in action rolled to victories, including the top-ranked volleyball squad running its win streak to 19 matches.  Softball won the only region game that a Golden Lion squad played last week while both cross country teams continued their strong performances.
