Both St. Pius X Soccer Teams Take State Titles

And other Golden Lions sports news from the previous week.

St. Pius X captured the fifth and sixth state titles of the 2012-13 school year as both Golden Lion soccer teams took the AAA crown last weekend. It marked the fourth time since 2001 that the squads swept their respective classification championship. Baseball also remains alive as it advanced to the semi-finals after another three-game series win. Boys’ golf played for the state championship Monday. Girls’ lacrosse had individual honors announced last week for two of its team members. Boys’ soccer did not yield a goal in the post-season as the Golden Lions (19-0-2) captured the AAA championship with a 2-0 win over Woodward. St. Pius X Junior Recognized as Outstanding Writer

Margaret Crawford of Decatur was chosen by the National Council of Teachers of English to be part of the 2013 Achievement Awards in Writing program.

St. Pius X Catholic High School junior Margaret Crawford of Decatur has been chosen by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) as one of its outstanding writers in the 2013 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing program. Crawford was one of three students from the state of Georgia recognized for the honor and the 38th St. Pius X student since 1969 to earn the honor. St. Pius X English Department Chairperson Mike Scirocco said, “On behalf of the English Department, I congratulate Margaret. To be recognized by the National Council of Teachers of English as one of the best writers in the nation testifies to her intelligence, creativity, and extraordinary ability to communicate complex ideas with style and precision. St. Pius X Spring Sports Wind Down in State Playoffs

And other Golden Lions sports news from the previous week.

The spring sport season is winding down at St. Pius X as the end of the school year approaches. Boys’ tennis finished as state runners-up while both soccer teams have advanced to the state semi-finals. Baseball stayed alive with two wins in decisive game threes to advance to the quarterfinals while each lacrosse team ended its season. Boys’ golf waits another week before participating in the state championship. Boys’ soccer has yet to allow a goal in the post-season as the squad shut out both Cartersville and Chapel Hill to advance to the semi-final round. The Golden Lions (17-0-2) were led by two goals from Alex Kowalski in a 3-0 win over Cartersville. St. Pius X then had to go on the road to face Chapel Hill and won 10-0 as Tyler …

St. Pius X Takes Fourth State Championship of Year

St. Pius X captured its fourth state championship of the 2012-13 school year as boys’ track and field dominated the field at the state meet. Boys’ tennis advanced to the state semifinals. Both soccer teams finished the regular season ranked on the top of their respective polls while baseball dropped to No. 7 in AAA. Girls’ lacrosse continues to stay at No. 8 in the A-AAAAA rankings by scoreatl.com. Boys’ track and field racked up 85 points, almost double the total of the second-place finisher, to capture the state championship this weekend. The spring sport season continues to see the regular season end at St. Pius X with only the lacrosse teams still having regular season games remaining. All other teams have entered the playoffs with both tennis teams advancing to quarterfinal play this week. The girls’ soccer team vaulted back to the top spot in the AAA state polls by scoreatl.com while the boys’ team remains No. 1. Baseball moved up a slot to No. 6 in AAA while girls’ lacrosse stays at No. 8 in the A-AAAAA rankings. Boys’ tennis advanced to the AAA state quarterfinals as the top seed out of Region 6-AAA. The regular season for most springs sports at St. Pius X is coming to an end, while boys’ and girls’ tennis begin the state playoffs this week. The girls’ soccer team vaulted back to the top spot in the AAA state polls by scoreatl.com, while the boys’ team remains No. 1. Baseball sits in the No. 7 spot in AAA while girls’ lacrosse dropped to No. 8 in the A-AAAAA rankings. Baseball recorded three shutouts, including two no-hitters last week to run its record to 17-4 on the year. After defeating Cross Keys, the Golden Lions no-hit Decatur, 14-0. St. Pius X Boys' Soccer Hold No. 1 Area Ranking

St. Pius X spring sports were back in action last week after most took time off during spring break. Boys' soccer remains No. 1 while the girls' soccer team dropped to No. 3 in the scoreatl.com polls. Baseball also fell in the rankings to No. 7 in AAA, and girls’ lacrosse continues to sit in the No. 7 spot in the A-AAAAA rankings. Baseball took its only game of the week with a 6-4 win over Woodward. The Golden Lions (12-4) used seven combined strikeouts from Michael Krill and Jack Spear in the victory. Justin Yestrumsky led the way at the plate, going 2-3 with a home run while Branden Mitchell added an RBI single. St. Pius X is back in action with three games this week, hosting Cross Keys and Towers on Monday and Friday, while travelling …

St. Pius X Students Participate in Spring Break Mission Trips

Students traveled to Washington, Jamaica and Nicaragua to help children.

While many students travelled out of town on spring break, several students from St. Pius X Catholic High School spent that week overseas or in the nation’s capital on mission trips.  The department of Campus Ministry sponsors two spring break mission trips each year, in addition to the annual summer trip. This year, due to the overwhelming popularity of past trips, Campus Ministry was able to expand the program to include a domestic trip, allowing more students the opportunity to serve. Nearly 50 students traveled to Washington, D.C., Jamaica and Nicaragua to assist in teaching, farming and building projects. St. Pius X sent two mission teams to assist with separate Mustard Seed Communities (MSC) in Jamaica and Nicaragua. MSC cares for …

St. Pius X Announces Governor's Honors Program Finalists

The Governor’s Honors Program is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors.

St. Pius X Catholic High School has received notification that five students have been selected as finalists for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program. The finalists from St. Pius X for the 2013 Georgia Governor’s Honors Program in Math: Josh Chatfield (Decatur); Visual Arts: Ana Haynes (Lawrenceville); Communicative Arts: Grace Obiofuma (Lawrenceville) and Lydia Pedersen (Lawrenceville). Nick Twiner (Atlanta) was named an alternate. The Governor’s Honors Program, known as GHP, is a residential summer program for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. A function of the Georgia Department of Education, it takes place on the campus of Valdosta State University. The 2013 program will be the 50th summer, making it the longest …

St. Pius X Sports Maintain Strong Rankings

The spring sport season begins to bear down on Spring Break as all St. Pius X teams are well into the regular season with several ranked in its respective sports polls by scoreatl.com. Boys' soccer remains No. 1 while the girls' soccer team dropped to No. 2. Baseball is ranked No. 4 in AAA, and girls’ lacrosse is No. 7 in the A-AAAAA rankings. Girls' lacrosse won its only game of last week, defeating Decatur 21-5 behind stellar goaltending by Sally Varner, who saved 11 of 15 shots. Katherine Vocelka scored five goals and had two assists, and Molly Cartwright tallied four times to lead the offensive attack.
