Both boys' and girls' soccer remain at the top of the AAA polls.

Spring sports are in full swing at St. Pius. Boys' and girls' soccer continue to sit atop both Georgia Athletic Coaches Association AAA polls while boys' and girls' tennis both reside in the No. 2 spot in their respective polls. Baseball stays ranked at No. 7 in AAA this week. Boys’ and girls’ tennis competed twice last week. The boys dropped both contests while the girls took one and did not finish the second match. The Golden Lions boys' tennis team dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 10 North Springs and lost 3-1 to No. 2 Starr’s Mill (AAAA). The ladies defeated North Springs 5-0 while the match with Starr’s Mill was not completed due to darkness. The netters will take on Riverwood and Marist this week. Volleyball and football rolled ahead with victories, and the football team maintained its No. 2 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's rankings.

Volleyball and football were the only varsity teams in action last week at St. Pius, and both recorded victories. Football moved into a tie at the No. 2 spot in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) poll while maintaining the No. 2 spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution rankings. The Golden Lions boys’ cross country team continues to be the top-ranked team in the AAA ga.milesplit.com poll and moved up a spot to No. 4 in the All-Classification poll. The girls’ cross country team holds the second spot in the AAA poll. Football continued its domination of Region 5-AAA, defeating previously unbeaten Grady (No. 5 GACA/No. 7 AJC), 49-16. Photo Gallery: St. Pius Homecoming

St. Pius shut out North Atlanta 42-0 during its Homecoming game on Friday night. At half the Golden Lions were up 7-0, and continued to add to their lead for the second half. Logan Rosborough led St. Pius with four touchdowns while Geno Smith and Nick Ruffin each added a touchdown for St. Pius. Homecoming Queen and King were named during the halftime show with Elizabeth Elliott and Phillip Quigley clinching the titles.

The Golden Lions' top-ranked volleyball squad continued its 19-game winning streak, and the football team defeated North Hall 38-13.

St. Pius fans had more to celebrate last week as all of the sports in action rolled to victories, including the top-ranked volleyball squad running its win streak to 19 matches.  Softball won the only region game that a Golden Lion squad played last week while both cross country teams continued their strong performances. The varsity football team crushed Benedictine over the weekend 35-0.

All five St. Pius fall teams were in action last week and over the Labor Day weekend as the Golden Lions continued their early season success. Volleyball, riding a 14-game win streak, retains its stranglehold on the top spot in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association AAA poll. Boys’ cross country also sits atop the ga.milesplit.com AAA poll while the lady harriers are ranked third. Football climbed one spot in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll to No. 4. The Golden Lion football team traveled to Savannah to take on Benedictine and returned with a 35-0 victory to push its record to 2-0. St. Pius Fall Sports Preview

The Golden Lions hope to build on their successful fall last year during which all six sports advanced to the playoffs.

Classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at St. Pius X Catholic High School; and with that the beginning of the fall athletics campaign. The Golden Lions will field six fall sports, all of which advanced to the state playoffs last season. Five of the programs took region or area crowns in 2010. As the 2011-12 school year commences, St. Pius will also look to win its fourth consecutive Regions Director’s Cup. If successful, St. Pius will be only the third school in Georgia to take home the cup four straight years since the honor began in 1999. On the gridiron, Paul Standard (84-33) enters his 11th season as the second winningest coach in St. Pius history behind the legendary George B. Maloof.
