St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The Golden Lions football team ended its season with a state quarterfinal loss to Cairo as the winter sports season starts up.

Only one team saw action last week during the Thanksgiving week. The Golden Lion football team hosted Cairo in the state quarterfinals Friday night. All winter sports action gets into full swing over the next two weeks. Boys' basketball has four games while the girls' cagers have five contests scheduled; both beginning tonight. Wrestling gets underway this weekend, and swimming and diving will be back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 6. The 2011 season concluded for the St. Pius football team in the state quarterfinals for the second time in three years. Cairo knocked off the Golden Lions (12-1) at George B. Maloof Stadium, 21-0. St. Pius Swimmers to Ink Scholarships Today

Haley Durmer, Mary Elizabeth King and Chandler Ryberg, all record holders, will head to Division I schools.

Three St. Pius swimmers will sign national letters-of-intent with NCAA Division I programs today at 3:15pm in the Donnellan Center. Haley Durmer, Mary Elizabeth King and Chandler Ryberg will sign with two Atlantic Coast Conference, and one Southeastern Conference school, respectively, in the ceremony. "These three swimmers have been the heart and soul of this team since the beginning as freshman here at St. Pius," head coach Scott Carter said in a statement. "Their performances are a big reason why the team has accomplished what is has during their time here." Durmer, a four-time All-American in several events, will sign with the University of Virginia. She holds individual school records in the 50-meter and 500m freestyle, the 200m …

Lakeside High Grad Trains for 2012 Olympic Trials

John Lane sets his sights the 2012 Olympic trials and his new life at Stanford University.

It’s 6:45am and John “Jack” Lane is doing what he does almost every other morning. He’s swimming in a pool during precious summer hours most students spend lying in bed. “He lives in the pool. There’s no other place you can find him,” is the answer you get when you walk in to the Dynamo Swim Club in Chamblee. The 18-year-old Lakeside High School graduate is getting ready for the 2012 Olympic Trials next June with his team at the swim club. Doing this requires about 24 hours of training per week during the summer, sometimes five hours a day, and 21 hours during the school year. Practices start around 7am and go until 10 in the morning every day but Sunday. These are supplemented with two more hours of training in the afternoon two to three …
