St. Pius X Spring Sports Wind Down in State Playoffs

And other Golden Lions sports news from the previous week.

The spring sport season is winding down at St. Pius X as the end of the school year approaches. Boys’ tennis finished as state runners-up while both soccer teams have advanced to the state semi-finals. Baseball stayed alive with two wins in decisive game threes to advance to the quarterfinals while each lacrosse team ended its season. Boys’ golf waits another week before participating in the state championship. Boys’ soccer has yet to allow a goal in the post-season as the squad shut out both Cartersville and Chapel Hill to advance to the semi-final round. The Golden Lions (17-0-2) were led by two goals from Alex Kowalski in a 3-0 win over Cartersville. St. Pius X then had to go on the road to face Chapel Hill and won 10-0 as Tyler …

St. Pius X Takes Fourth State Championship of Year

And other Golden Lions sports news from the past week.

St. Pius X captured its fourth state championship of the 2012-13 school year as boys’ track and field dominated the field at the state meet. Boys’ tennis advanced to the state semifinals. Both soccer teams finished the regular season ranked on the top of their respective polls while baseball dropped to No. 7 in AAA. Girls’ lacrosse continues to stay at No. 8 in the A-AAAAA rankings by scoreatl.com. Boys’ track and field racked up 85 points, almost double the total of the second-place finisher, to capture the state championship this weekend. The spring sport season continues to see the regular season end at St. Pius X with only the lacrosse teams still having regular season games remaining. All other teams have entered the playoffs with both tennis teams advancing to quarterfinal play this week. The girls’ soccer team vaulted back to the top spot in the AAA state polls by scoreatl.com while the boys’ team remains No. 1. Baseball moved up a slot to No. 6 in AAA while girls’ lacrosse stays at No. 8 in the A-AAAAA rankings. Boys’ tennis advanced to the AAA state quarterfinals as the top seed out of Region 6-AAA. St. Pius X Sports Prepare for State Playoffs

The regular season for most springs sports at St. Pius X is coming to an end, while boys’ and girls’ tennis begin the state playoffs this week. The girls’ soccer team vaulted back to the top spot in the AAA state polls by scoreatl.com, while the boys’ team remains No. 1. Baseball sits in the No. 7 spot in AAA while girls’ lacrosse dropped to No. 8 in the A-AAAAA rankings. Baseball recorded three shutouts, including two no-hitters last week to run its record to 17-4 on the year. After defeating Cross Keys, the Golden Lions no-hit Decatur, 14-0. St. Pius X Soccer Ranked Tops in Early Polls

St. Pius X's spring sport season has moved into high gear as all athletic programs are well into the regular season with several ranked in its respective sports inaugural polls by scoreatl.com. Both soccer teams sit in the top spot of the polls while baseball is ranked No. 4 in AAA. Girls’ lacrosse is No. 10 in the only other sport poll that has been released to date. Boys’ tennis took both matches last week behind stellar play of Austin Boaz, Austin Causey, Jack Cote and Parker Jones. The Golden Lions defeated Marist 3-2 and Dunwoody 4-1. St. Pius X travels to Starr’s Mill Monday before hosting Decatur on Wednesday and Woodward on Thursday at the DeKalb Tennis Center. Boys’ soccer went undefeated in its three matches last week. Henderson Middle Wins County Track Title

Henderson and Cedar Grove captured the girls’ and boys’ titles on Tuesday.

Cedar Grove and Henderson pulled away on finals day at the 2013 DeKalb County Middle School Track and Field Championships to capture the boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively, at Panthersville Stadium on Tuesday. Cedar Grove held just a four point lead over Chamblee (24-20) after the field events and 1600-meter run finals on Saturday. Rain postponed the meet from Monday to Tuesday and Cedar Grove captured two gold medals and finished in the top three of the individual results in five of the seven events to put up 62 points in winning 86-58 over Chamblee. Netori Johnson (45-09.00) and Jediah Johnson (41-02.00) took first and third, respectively, in the shot put and Rayquan Bonner took second in the long jump (18-10.25) in Saturday’s opening…

St. Pius X Girls' Basketball Takes Fourth State Title

The winter season concluded over the weekend with St. Pius X's girls’ basketball team capturing its fourth state title.  Track and field had three individuals participate in the indoor nationals in New York, while girls’ soccer scored a victory over a top-ranked foe.  Baseball travelled for a doubleheader on Saturday and the girls’ golf team tuned up for the Atlanta Archdiocese Cup taking place this week.  Both lacrosse teams had light weeks with only one contest. The girls’ basketball team defeated Dawson County to take the AAA state championship in Macon by a 77-55 score.  Asia Durr scored 26 points, while Jasmine Carter and Mackenzie Garrison added 19 and 11, respectively.  Laura Redmond chipped in nine points and eight rebounds in the …

St. Pius X Girls' Basketball Advances to State Title Game

And other Golden Lions sports news from the past week.

All spring sports were in action last week as both basketball teams continued state playoff runs. The girls’ basketball team advanced to the state title game to be played this upcoming Saturday in Macon. The golf teams were the last spring sports to get started with tournaments on the coast over the weekend. The girls’ basketball team advanced to the AAA state championship game with two victories last week. The Golden Lions (29-3) defeated No. 1 Buford in the quarterfinals 56-43 behind 32 points from sophomore Asia Durr. In the semifinals in Savannah, St. Pius X overcame a 10-point first quarter deficit to defeat Chapel Hill 59-51. Durr poured in 27 points, and scored her 1,000th point with her first basket of the game. Jasmine Carter …

St. Pius Thrower Signs National Letter of Intent

Senior Kyle Greer Johnson will head to Wake Forest.

Senior St. Pius X Thrower Kyle Greer Johnson signed a National Letter of Intent with the Wake Forest University track and field program on Wednesday. A member of the track and field team, Johnson was also a lineman for the Golden Lion football team that finished the 2012 season as AAA state runner-up, completing a 12-3 campaign. Johnson is ranked in the national top 10 of throwers and is a member of the Throw 1 Deep Club based in Marietta. He is the son of Tony and Karyn Greer-Johnson. Wake Forest, located in Winston-Salem, N.C., is a charter member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Druid Hills Student Qualifies for State Track Meet

Ryan Whetten will compete in the pole vault competition later this month.

Druid Hills High School track star Ryan Whetten will compete in the state pole vault competition later this month. Whetten was the only student from Druid Hills to qualify for the state meet. The boys’ state track meet will be held May 10-12 at Jefferson Memorial Stadium in Jefferson.
