The winter sports St. Pius X have concluded or entered the state playoffs while spring sports opened regular seasons last week. The girls' basketball team continues to be ranked No. 3 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll while the boys' team moved into the top 10 at No. 10. Wrestling had two grapplers place in the state traditional meet. Soccer and tennis opened its regular seasons last week as baseball and lacrosse lift the lids on their regular seasons this week. Girls' basketball took its second region title in three years, knocking off Decatur 51-35 in the Region 6-AAA championship game. As exams and the Christmas break approach, the St. Pius football team advanced to the Georgia High School Association AAA State Championship game with a semi-final win last Friday night. The basketball teams began region play last week, and swimming and diving opened its season. Wrestling hit the mats twice during the same stretch. The Golden Lion football team hosted North Hall in the semi-final round of the state playoffs. St. Pius (12-2) used two touchdowns each from Jack Spear and Ryan Braswell to earn a 31-6 win and a spot in the state championship game this Friday at the Georgia Dome. Although winter sports are starting to kick into high gear at St. Pius, the Golden Lion football team continues to march on in the GHSA AAA state playoffs. The Golden Lions advanced to the state semifinals for the first time since 2006 with a win last week. Both basketball teams opened the home schedules with wins, and wrestling hit the mats for the first time this season. St. Pius (11-2) defeated Washington County on Friday night 40-35. Jack Spear passed for two touchdowns, one each to Branden Mitchell and Nick Ruffin, and Ryan Braswell rushed for three scores. Mitchell also ran for 164 yards. While most were enjoying the Thanksgiving break, the football team at St. Pius hosted a second round Georgia High School Association (GHSA) AAA playoff game. The Golden Lions, ranked No. 7 in the AAA poll, advanced to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive year and third time in four seasons. Boys' basketball and girls' basketball played in tournaments over the break. Football defeated Hart County, the No. 3 seed from Region 8-AAA, 31-15.
