American Cancer Society CEO to Speak at Mercer Graduation

The university will also give Dr. John R. Seffrin an honorary Doctor of Science degree.

Mercer University will hold its annual campus-wide outdoor commencement in Atlanta on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. on the upper field of the Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus. More than 1,000 graduates are expected for the ceremony, which is the university’s largest. Dr. John R. Seffrin, chief executive officer at American Cancer Society, will speak at the event. The university will also award Dr. Seffrin an honorary Doctor of Science degree at the ceremony. In all, the university will have conferred more than 1,800 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees during five commencements on three campuses since early May. Mercer Counseling Team Heading to Newtown

The group will train pastors in the Connecticut town on post-traumatic stress disorder counseling.

A team of Atlanta-based Mercer University students and faculty, funded by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, traveled to Newtown, Conn., on Thursday to hold a pastor training conference, focused on conducting post traumatic stress disorder counseling sessions with local ministers. Many of the expected 50 pastors have experienced secondary trauma caused by the Newtown school shooting that occurred on Dec. 14. Although not victims themselves, many worked around Sandy Hook Elementary School, knew someone who was directly affected or have someone in their congregations who was affected. “I approach this trip with excitement and apprehension because this is such an incredible tragedy and it strikes at everyone’s heart when something happens to…

Mercer University to Hold Commencement

More than 1,800 will graduate in five ceremonies across the state, including one at the Atlanta campus.

More than 1,800 graduates will participate in Mercer University commencements during May in Macon, Atlanta and Savannah. This marks the third year for the University’s campus-wide outdoor commencement in Atlanta, which has become the University’s largest. The University will confer bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees during five commencement ceremonies across the state. The University will also confer three honorary degrees during the commencements to distinguished alumni and community members. Mercer Launches Health Coaching Certificate for Piedmont Healthcare

The university has already begun teaching the first class is the program.

Mercer University’s College of Continuing and Professional Studies has developed a Certificate in Health Coaching and Multidisciplinary Care Coordination for Piedmont Healthcare and will begin teaching the first class in the program today. The program is designed to train the coaches to help identify and work with patients suffering from a number of chronic conditions, helping them to lead healthier, longer lives while avoiding hospitalizations and emergency room visits. More than 30 nurses and medical assistants from Piedmont Heart Institute and Piedmont Physicians Group will begin a five-month series of classes today. The university gave the former Fulton County prosecutor this year's Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Mercer University’s Alumni Association has recognized Atlanta’s Nancy Grace with this year’s Distinguished Alumnus Award. The award is given each year to an alumnus or alumna of Mercer who has served his or her profession in an outstanding manner, and, in so doing, has brought honor to his or her person and the university. The award is presented during Homecoming for service to humanity and dedication which have fostered the ideals of Mercer. An advocate for victims’ rights and one of television’s most respected legal analysts, Grace is host of CNN Headline News’ top-rated program Nancy Grace. Mercer University to Offer Public Health Degree for Working Adults

The school's Atlanta campus will now offer the program for the first time.

Metro Atlanta residents interested in earning a public health degree during convenient evening hours will soon be able to do so on Mercer University’s graduate and professional campus in Atlanta. Beginning in August 2013, Mercer will offer the Master of Public Health degree on its Atlanta campus near I-85 and I-285. The generalist degree program is designed particularly for working adults seeking to either build or enhance their broad understanding of preventative health and research within local and global communities. Since 1998, Mercer has offered the public health degree program on its Macon campus, producing hundreds of graduates. Mercer Professor Named Georgia's Counselor Educator of Year

Karen Rowland, assistant professor of counseling in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies in Atlanta, was given the award by the Georgia School Counselors Association.

Mercer University's Karen Rowland, an assistant professor of counseling in the College of Continuing and Professional Studies based in Atlanta, has been named the Counselor Educator of the Year for 2012 by the Georgia School Counselors Association. Rowland will also represent Georgia for ASCA's national counselor educator of the year award in 2013. This prestigious award is based on commitment to excellence in guidance and counseling. Mercer Summer Program Exposes High Schoolers to Pharmacy Profession, Careers

The programs runs from July 24-26.

Fifty high school students are scheduled to participate in a three-day pharmacy summer program at Mercer University's College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences thanks to a $10,000 gift from Walgreens designed to foster diversity in the field of pharmacy. Most of the participants attend metro Atlanta high schools, but some are coming from other Georgia cities, and even other states such as North Carolina and Wisconsin. The Mercer Pharmacy Scholars Summer Program runs July 24-26 on the university's Atlanta campus. The program, now in its second year, is for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with interests in careers in pharmacy or pharmaceutical sciences.
