Lakeside's Burdette-Sapp Takes Bronze in 100-Yard Freestyle

Chamblee's Kemenov takes gold at state swim meet.

Hayes Burdette-Sapp picked up a bronze medal in the 100 yard freestyle in a time of 47.67 to help Lakeside to a tie for 25th in the team's standing at the A-AAAAA State Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday. The only top 10 finish in the girls’ state meet for DeKalb was eighth in the 400 yard relay by the Lakeside Lady Vikings’ team of Rachel Hu, Lizzy White, Julia Acosta and Anna Ewing. The team swam a time of 3:47.26. Lakeside finished 17th overall with 42 points. But Chamblee senior Alex Kemenov captured the 100 yard breaststroke state title at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center on Saturday to lead the Chamblee Bulldogs to a seventh place finish in the championships. St. Pius X Girls Basketball Remains at No. 3 Poll Spot

As the calendar moves closer to February, the winter sports teams at St. Pius X are reaching the conclusions of the regular season while spring sports begin practice. The girls’ basketball team continues to sit in the No. 3 spot in the AJC AAA poll while Swimming and Diving climbed to No. 3 in the scoreatl.com A-AAAAA boys’ state poll and No. 4 in the girls’ rankings. Boys' basketball upped its record to 15-6 overall and 8-2 in Region 6-AAA play. St. Pius X knocked off Towers, 45-38 Tuesday. The Golden Lions followed with a 61-13 win over Cross Keys before stepping out of region play on Saturday. Excel Christian (20-1) defeated St. Pius X 64-62 at the buzzer in overtime. St. Pius Boys, Girls Basketball Ranked High Early in Season

The boys are ranked No. 8 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's AAA poll while the girls sit in the No. 3 spot.

With the end of the winter break and start of second semester last week, the St. Pius sports teams were back in action. Boys’ basketball entered the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll at No. 8 following three wins last week. The girls’ basketball team continues to sit in the No. 3 spot in the AJC AAA poll while swimming and diving climbed to No. 3 in the scoreatl.com A-AAAAA boys’ state poll and No. 4 in the girls’ rankings. The Lady Golden Lions continue to soar, and the boys basketball team enters its regional tournament as a fifth-seed.

The regular season for the winter sports has concluded and most teams are entering region or state tournaments this week. The spring sport season has begun for two teams, with others beginning the regular season this week. Girls’ basketball moved one spot in both polls as it occupies the No. 4 spot in the latest Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) AAA poll and No. 2 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll. The Golden Lion girls’ basketball team won both games last week to sweep the sub-region for the second year in a row with a 12-0 record for the first back-to-back undefeated region season in at least 20 years. St. Pius Weekly Sports Recap

The girls' basketball team continues to sit at No. 3 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll, and the boys' team is posting big improvements from last season.

Three sports were in action last week as both varsity basketball squads swept region opponents while wrestling traveled to the area tournament. Swimming and diving was off last week. Girls’ basketball continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the latest Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (GACA) AAA poll and No. 3 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll. The Golden Lion girls’ basketball team defeated Riverwood on Tuesday to clinch the top spot in Sub-Region A of Region 5-AAA and a first-round bye in the region tournament. Emma Ucinski scored 15 points in the 37-27 win. Sydni Payne added eight points, and Anna O’Donnell grabbed six rebounds to lead the team. As the winter regular season winds down, the girls' basketball team continues to sit in the No. 5 spot in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association.

The winter regular season begins to wind down this week. Wrestling participates in the Area tournament while both basketball teams play the final home games of the regular season with one more week to play. Swimming and Diving has the week off before the state championships next weekend.
