On the article Strip Clubs: Good or Bad?

ReplyThe Pink Pony is located on a side street in a commercial area. I've driven past it many times, day and night, and never seen loitering or anything shifty looking. And, Cheshire Bridge road? Come on -- it's an icon! They should leave it alone. I saw someone recently complaining that the strip clubs on Cheshire Bridge lowered the value of his house. Why would you buy a house near a street that has been the location for strip clubs, bars, and other adult establishments for many years, and then complain about it? I'd rather see an area like Cheshire Bridge where everyone knows what to expect, than random establishments popping up in neighborhood shopping centers.

ReplyI think the early release day in the middle of the week is a terrible plan. It puts parents in a bind for child care, and ensures that if they are paying for aftercare, their cost will go up significantly. I've been a teacher, and I know they need extra planning time, but better to have more teacher work days than this plan.

ReplyI agree with E. Keithley's comment about featuring school kids. Also, maybe a religion section if you don't already have one. I loved the book "The Princess and the Goblin" as a child, and I would love to take my daughter and her friend to the ballet.

On the article Decatur Residents Question Walmart, Suburban Plaza Developers

ReplyMost of Suburban Plaza is cool. Decatur Estate (renamed), Hancock, the Indian clothing store, the beauty supply store, even Big Lots. Talk about "Decatur funky"! I've bought stuff at all those place multiple times. I think if they got something interesting in the grocery store slot at the front it would help. Like, maybe a Pier I. That would be in theme with cheap, off-beat, imported goods, but looks a little more upscale.

On the article Briarlake PTA Lobbying Local Pols, Building Campaign Against Cell Tower

ReplyI live near Briarlake (across LaVista from the school) and sent my kids there. I'd like to know what the basis is for the protest. The school system desperately needs money, and cell coverage in the area is lousy. If it were harmful to the kids, none of that would matter, though. So I did a little (very little) research by looking at the American Cancer Center's web site. According to this well-respected source, there is no evidence that cell phone towers are a cancer risk, because the type of radiation given off does not affect DNA, and the nature of the towers makes the level of radiation at ground level very low in any case. It's no higher than a similar type, radio waves, that are surrounding people in metro areas all the time. The article is very clear, brief, and explains the issue well. Here is the link: http://www.cancer.org/Cancer/CancerCauses/OtherCarcinogens/AtHome/cellular-phone-towers.

On the article What Would You Like to See in Suburban Plaza?

ReplyI like Suburban Plaza the way it is. I use the thrift store, love the Indian clothing store and the consignment store, and have shopped in both on many occasions. I also shop at Big Lots from time to time. And the Hancock's is the only fabric store nearby, I've shopped there a lot. Sure, the facade is ugly and the goods for sale are lower-priced and not fancy, but so what? I find it a useful mix of things I want and need.

On the article Police: Few Gang Problems in Northlake, But Stay Alert

ReplyWe live within a mile of Northlake, and it does seem as though we've had more property crime and some burglary-related assaults in the past 4-5 years. It's hard to tell if this is because there really is more crime, or if the Internet is allowing us to spread the information more. I was surprised to hear of someone who was recently mugged while walking on LaVista Road near where we live. I guess it's always good to be careful, but I miss feeling safe.

The whole "mini-city" idea is white vs. black. If this were an all-white county, it'd (only) be rich vs. poor, but racial politics add another layer here. The state needs to regularize this process and stop the wealthiest parts of the county from taking their toys and going home.
