Northlake Residents Plan Town Hall About Crime

Residents of an area affected by a rash of car break-ins, including state Rep. Scott Holcomb, plan a town hall meeting to discuss the problem and solutions.

A has affected Northlake-area residents as diverse as a priest and . Now residents are coming together to talk about how they can make and keep their neighborhood safer.

CBS 46 reports that a town hall meeting will be held on Jan. 5 at 7 pm at Evansdale Elementary. Along with the meeting, residents who can do so are encouraged to join DeKalb County Police's Volunteers in Patrol. VIP participants patrol their own neighborhoods and get in touch with police if they see suspicious things.

To join VIP, you must be a DeKalb County resident, at least 21 years old, with a valid driver's license and proof of auto insurance. You must also be able to complete a background check. You must have no felony convictions, no misdemeanor convinctions in the past five years, no moving violations in the past two years and no DUI convinctions in the past ten years. Police officers train VIP participants before they hit the streets.

The Northlake Community Alliance and Rep. Holcomb are working with police to shore up area patrols and stop the break-ins. It is hoped that this meeting will raise awareness and send a message that residents will not tolerate crime in their area.
